Lesson #3: The Essential Lies in the Execution
| |
| When Huizenga was asked what he thought was more important in creating a successful company – the idea or the execution – he did not hesitate for a second to respond: “The execution, because there are many great ideas, but you must be able to execute to succeed.” |

Do you “call off the game and head back to the locker room” or do you stick to the game plan and find a way to win the day? |

| |
| This is the 1st in the series of the 10 Kurlan Sales Management Functions.
#1 - COACHING
In its simplest form, sales coaching consists of the following two activities:
1. Pre-Call Strategizing - coaching prior to selected calls to make sure that the salesperson has a good reason for having the upcoming call, a desired outcome, a game plan or strategy, and the appropriate questions/dialog to achieve the desired outcome.
2. Post-Call Debriefing - coaching after selected calls to discover the true outcome of the call, why the salesperson got that outcome, and what they could have done differently or more effectively... |

Razban Golden Rule 3: Executive Coach's Game Plan
| |
| An Executive Coach, just like a Football or Basketball Coach, must create a Game Plan that consists of synchronized Strategic and day-to-day plans for the operation of the company. These two plans must roll into company business plan that includes market share and ROI. All three must be considered living documents and subject to change control. |

Fix the sales force you have
| |
| Would we expect any elite sporting team to enter a competition without a clear game plan, talent plan, fitness plan, business plan and action plan? No, of course not. We expect them to be aware, organised, focused and determined to play their best and aim to win.
Well, more than 90% of sales people do not follow any logical process when selling. They are often left to their own devices and simply fly by the seat of their pants, relying on intuition and hoping for the best.
They often cannot articulate their value proposition or know how they compare to the competition. Nor are they clear about what activities they need to do on a daily basis to achieve sales success. Most make it up.
No wonder many don't meet business owners expectations. |

How to fix sputtering marketing
| |
| Is your marketing generating a steady stream of sales leads ?
If not, ask yourself this question: Do you have a marketing plan?
You may know what your business goals and objectives are. And you probably have a website and are doing some advertising or promotion. But without a game plan, your marketing activities are reduced to a few unconnected activities that are unlikely to produce the results you want.
A marketing plan helps you tie all your marketing activities together so you can create a roadmap that will lead you to your objectives.
And a simple, one-page marketing plan will take you a lot further than no marketing plan at all.

How to Get More Clients - NOW!
| |
| McGraw Hill’s study found that those businesses that boosted their public relations, marketing and advertising during a recession grew 275% over the 5 years proceeding. However, those businesses that cut back, if they were still in business, only grew 19%. That’s pretty striking. It doesn’t take a genius to see that the worst business decision you can make, particularly in tough times, is to cut back your marketing efforts. |

When the Fed Bails Out the BIG 3...Who Bails Out the Dealers?
| |
| The Senate and House got a jolt this week while debating whether to bail out the Big 3 when it was learned that we shed over 500,000 jobs in November. The possibility of additional job losses from the domestic auto industry became the main reason for
rushing to approve a bail out. Weʼll call it “Job 1”, coining a phrase from Ford. During the wonder years of post 911 rebates, 0% financing, and high margin sales of pick-ups and large SUVʼs the domestic manufacturers started adding new dealership locations like drunken sailors, diluting the value of the existing locations, lowering their sales, raising their marketing expenses for a share of voice in the over crowded print and electronic media, while forcing additional inventory on all of the locations.

Organizational Talent You Need To Succeed
| |
| No organization can continue to prosper and grow without having the right people in the right jobs. Quoting Jack Welch of GE fame, “Winning is about having the best people on your team. It doesn’t help if you’re surrounded by people who are less talented than you are.” So much of leadership is about accomplishing results through others. |

Sustainability Growth and Talent Are Key

With this objective in mind, the organization must also build a dream team of talent. This allows the organization to be both compliance (sustainable) and performance (growth) oriented. |

How to Achieve Success When You Miss an Opportunity
| |
| On November 5 when the Alabama-Crimson Tide played the LSU-Tigers, Alabama had many missed opportunities; they missed four field goals. These missed field goals proved critical since LSU ultimately won by three points. Losing by such a narrow margin made the pain of missing the field goals hurt even more.
We have all experienced missed opportunities. However, it is important to keep playing the game. When you fumble or make a mistake, you have to think like a football player and concentrate on the next play. Instead of continuing to focus on the fumbles, it is important to concentrate on the recoveries you can make.

Does Your Company Have a Brain?
| |
| Coming up with the right game plan offers the best chance at success. If innovation is the heart of a technology company, then the game plan is the brain. One cannot succeed without both. Flaws in innovation are rare in the United States, but game plans are always flawed, and they are usually fatally flawed-which accounts for the high rate of failure for start-up companies. A dictum originating in the Harvard MBA training program is that “a company that prepares and follows a good game plan has the best chance for success.” Rigorously following the game plan-while continuously searching for the flaws and applying corrective action-offers a small company this best chance to succeed.

Turn Your Do-List Into A Game
| |
| The do-list is a burden we carry around, day in, day out. When we have nearly completed it, we or someone else dumps more "do" on it. It's a game you never win.
Turning your do-list into a game, by making it a scorecard, shifts the paradigm. Now it becomes a game - a game which you can win or lose, a game where you don't win 'em all, a game which is both challenging and entertaining. What a difference! |

The Dawn of Pokemon: Tajiri Launches His Game
| |
| Tajiri was no stranger to video games. In the early 1980s, he had won a contest sponsored by Sega that involved making a video game. With his “Game Freak” colleagues, Tajiri had also created his first video game, Quinty, which was published by Namco. But in 1991, Tajiri discovered something that he thought was revolutionary: the Game Boy. When he saw two boys playing a game together, connecting their Game Boys by a link cable, Tajiri immediately began to think of the possibilities. “I saw Game Boy when it was first released,” says Tajiri. “The idea for Pokémon clicked in my mind. The basic idea for Pokemon seemed a good fit for Game Boy.” |

Are You In The Game
| |
| Have you ever noticed that it is the people in the stands who supposedly know everything about the game? They give all kinds of advice, but you don't see them actually in the game. It is as if the game exists only for them. Many will say that yes, the game does exist for the fans, for without the fans, where would the game be? I'd like to throw a wrench into that argument and say that, yes the fans are an important part of the game, but without the players, the game wouldn't exist either. |

Don't Drive in the Dark
| |
| We recently utilized our airpower against Libya arguably by numerous people from both side of the aisle without an End Game. To me, that is like driving in the dark. At that point we have no idea of the outcome. Without lights, euphuism for an End Game, the odds are not in our favor. You don’t get up in the morning and get in your car without knowing exactly what your destination is. That is what an End Game is all about; what exactly is your destination. You can’t run a company effectively, maximizing all opportunity without creating a long term plan. And, there is no such thing as a long term plan that will work without a defined End Game.
The Libya situation reminds me of what I often see in companies every day. It’s either a lack of serious long term planning or the lack of a defined End Game. |
