The Nine Biggest Myths of the Workplace by Penelope Trunk
I liked Penelop Trunk's interview so much that I asked her for more material. Here's her list of the nine biggest workplace myths:

Work Is A Four-Letter Word
Consider turning your "job" into "work" and improve your career, your outlook and your life!

Think Like a Steward, Perform Like a Patriot
Political correctness – at least the contorted, silly version – is not high on my list of obligatory behaviors. I’ve certainly never deliberately used language likely to offend or disrespect, but I generally refuse to participate in society’s love affair with euphemisms. For me, a garbage collector is a garbage collector, not a “sanitation engineer.” Collecting garbage may not be glamorous, but it’s a necessary and honorable occupation. If my garbage collector went on strike I’d miss him a lot sooner than I’d miss a sportscaster or politician who walked out on the job. But there’s at least one verbal adjustment that I gladly make. In describing someone’s employee or assistant, I no longer use the term “subordinate.” More >>

The 10 Most Common Words You Should Stop Using Now
Words are thoughts. The better we choose our words, the more we hone our thinking machine, and just like software, it’s a case of GIGO: Garbage In, Garbage Out. Thinking hard is pointless if we don’t use the right tools.

2.5 Living and working in the urban informal economy: Working Out of Poverty
Street vendors in Mexico City; rickshaw pullers in Calcutta; jeepney drivers in Manila; garbage collectors in Bogotá; and roadside barbers in Durban – those who work on the streets or in the open air are the more visible occupational groups in the informal economy. The streets of cities, towns, and villages in most developing countries – and in many developed countries – are lined with barbers, cobblers, garbage collectors, waste recyclers, and vendors of vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, snack foods, and a myriad of nonperishable items ranging from locks and keys to soaps and detergents, and clothing. In many countries, head-loaders, cart pullers, bicycle peddlers, rickshaw pullers, and camel, bullock, or horse-cart drivers jostle to make their way down narrow village lanes or through the maze of traffic on city streets.

How NLP Can Give You the Edge at Work
Certainly there's a lot of garbage talked about NLP, and NLP has been used in unethical and distasteful ways. But if you strip out the hype and apply some critical intelligence, here's how it can over-deliver for you in the workplace.

Control Your Inputs
Your mind is your ultimate personal computer. Like your laptop at home, sometimes you might forget to turn on your mental virus protection program allowing negative thoughts to invade your mind - without even realizing it. So, the computer adage "Garbage in, garbage out" as it applies to your mind should really be "Garbage in, garbage stays."

Home-based Business Idea: Antique and Collectible Dealership
Before you venture into a home-based business dealing antique collections and other collector’s items, it is important that you have prepared and planned for this few months or years earlier to allow you time to fill in your inventory room.

Why Listen To Debtors
Listening to all of a debtor's communication is difficult, both because of the complex feelings the collector may have about the job they are doing as well as their need to deal with the emotional overload the debtor may throw at the collector. Fortunately, there are time-tested ways to get past the emotional content - whether real or manufactured as a way to get the collector to back off or to commit to less.

Choosing Our Poison or Choosing to Let Go
I am running late for an important appointment and speeding down a two-lane highway. Suddenly I come up behind a garbage truck lumbering along well below the speed limit. The highway is full of oncoming traffic, curves, and hills so I can't pass. If I start to get angry, pound the steering wheel, and really work myself into lather about this, who is in control of my emotions at this point - a garbage truck or me?
