A Day as a Gen Y Imposter
| |
| A conversation between Linda Gravett, PhD, SPHR (a Baby Boomer) and Robin Throckmorton, MA, SPHR (a Gen Xer) as they remember the day they did a presentation. This was not a normal presentation. On this day, Linda dressed the part of a Gen Y and Robin dressed the part of a Radio Baby Imposter. In the article they share their feelings and impressions as they deliver a training in the shoes of another generation. |

Communication: What’s the Best Way?
| |
| We are experience many different communication challenges in our workforce everyday given the different communication styles of each of the generations in the workplace. Is one generation’s style more correct than another? Is there one communication style that is better than another? It depends…on the people you work with, the clients you interact with and the culture of your company.
As part of our research for Bridging the Generation Gap, Linda Gravett, PhD, SPHR, CEQC and I asked 500 individuals in each of the generations what their preferred communication method was in order to learn more about the different communication styles. We quickly learned there were definitely preferences based on the generations.

FUSION: A Six Step Solutin to Handling Conflict Across Generations
| |
| Together, Robin Throckmorton, MA, SPHR and Linda Gravett, PhD, SPHR share their expertise about conflict around work ethic and work methods, which are the primary sources of conflict in today's workplace even if you are a small nonprofit or a large Fortune 500 corporation. Plus, there are many other sources of conflict ranging from work-life balance issues, loyalty, respect, career choices, technology capabilities or availabilities, dress code to name just a few. The conflicts themselves are the feeder but the impacts they can have on the workplace are more crucial - miscommunications, decrease in morale, increase in absenteeism, increase in turnover, loss of productivity, or loss of customers. We don't, however, have to accept conflict in the workplace and these potentially detrimental impacts as the norm.

The iGen
| |
| NO...Doesn't have a thing to do with "that" smartphone...or "that" store...or "that" tablet. It's the next generation. Kids and we mean little kids. That's what today's products are being designed for/targeted at. You happen to buy one...fine.
Watch a little, little kid pick up a smartphone. He/she just uses it. They've come pre-wired and we're still trying to figure out how to IM. It's the IGen. They want it instantly. They want to use it instantly. They expect their photos, their video, their music, their stuff immediately when/where/how they want it.
35-year-olds are over the hill. 20 year olds just at the peak of the hill. 15 year olds, half way up the hill. 50 year olds...ferget it!!!!
So we've looked at the people who will replace you as the prime market. Curious....take a look !!!

Boomers … the Numbers, the Markets Keep Growing
| |
| You can fight it all you want but you're getting close to, passed through or can't even see it in the rearview mirror. It is your becoming part of the boomer plus generation. You may find it tough to find a pair of jeans that fit just right on you but don't forget boomers have most of the world's net worth, their numbers are growing faster than the GenX, GenY folks. They'll probably live longer than past generations, they're going to work longer, they'll stay involved/stay active, they're online more and they buy more PC/CE/content toys than the other groups. Maybe it's because we're just pushed past the early phases of Booming and our kids have been giving us a hard time. We just repeat in our mind what Mark Twain said, "Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. " BAM !! Things are OK again. |

| |
| There are labels and definitions for each generation. Are you a Boomer? Gen X? Gen Y? We're told how each generation feels and thinks and why they can't relate to all the other generations. But you know what? At the end of the day, it doesn't matter.

I WANT IT AND I WANT IT NOW – The dilemma of employing Gen Y
| |
| This kind of thinking is probably what got us all into the terrible financial crisis that is raging across the world like some kind of out-of-control bush fire. The Wall Street credo that greed is good has rapidly become greed is very expensive.
In this article though, I want to focus primarily on the habits and behaviours of what we know as the Gen Y kids, those born between 1979 and 1994.

Working for the Right Person

| People who are winning at working work for the right person - the one looking back in mirror. That differentiation changes everything. It's easier to know what jobs to seek, skills to enhance, and opportunities to seize. It's easier to know when you should change paths, companies, or bosses. And it's easier to weather workplace stresses when you're the one holding the compass for your life. |
