Selling to the Different Generations: What to Look For and What to Avoid
| |
| It really amazes me on how differently the generations behave in terms of their buying motivations and their spending habits. Although everyone is unique, we can clearly see a generalization among age groups. I believe these differences come from peoples surroundings and their influences consequently we are a product of our environment.
Let’s have a look at some of the trends we see in the last few generations assuming a breakdown as follows:
|
|
|
Helping Your Aging Parents Help Themselves (Step One)

| "THE 2-STEP PROCESS TO AGREEMENT" consists of 1) helping your aging parent(s) determine what they want and 2) helping them get it. |

Trash or Treasure: De-cluttering That Preserves The Memories
| |
| Do you have a "memory box" filled with treasures such as a corsage from your high school prom, your Girl Scout badge sash, old Valentine's cards, a napkin from your wedding, ticket stubs from your first pro ball game, or your baby's first shoes? While this "stuff" may look like junk to others, to you these mementos represent precious memories, the story of your life - what I call the "family fortune". |

A Day as a Gen Y Imposter
| |
| A conversation between Linda Gravett, PhD, SPHR (a Baby Boomer) and Robin Throckmorton, MA, SPHR (a Gen Xer) as they remember the day they did a presentation. This was not a normal presentation. On this day, Linda dressed the part of a Gen Y and Robin dressed the part of a Radio Baby Imposter. In the article they share their feelings and impressions as they deliver a training in the shoes of another generation. |

Communication: What’s the Best Way?
| |
| We are experience many different communication challenges in our workforce everyday given the different communication styles of each of the generations in the workplace. Is one generation’s style more correct than another? Is there one communication style that is better than another? It depends…on the people you work with, the clients you interact with and the culture of your company.
As part of our research for Bridging the Generation Gap, Linda Gravett, PhD, SPHR, CEQC and I asked 500 individuals in each of the generations what their preferred communication method was in order to learn more about the different communication styles. We quickly learned there were definitely preferences based on the generations.

Generation Why? Because We AREN'T YOU!
| |
| I was blessed this summer to have the best experience ever with a summer intern, Kristin Kaminski. We shared many stories about the generations in the workplace but I'm here to tell you that all the stories you hear about the Gen Ys are fairy tales that should be placed in a bedside book for humor rather than told in a management 101 class. Together we will share our expertise on the Gen Y generation in this article on Generation Why? Because We AREN'T YOU!!!
What should be taught in the management classes about Gen Ys is they are misunderstood and being managed inappropriately. Let me tell you why...

Lead Generating
| |
| Lead generating has to be the cornerstone of sales these days. Without it we’d all be making cold calls, one after another in hopes of finding someone interested in our products or services. The supposition behind lead generation is that there is already an interest in place, which makes the sales person’s job a whole lot easier. But what are lead generations exactly and how do we get and incorporate them? |

Is It Really Possible to Create a High Traffic Blog?
| |
| The blogging bug bit mankind a couple of years ago and since then, it has spread like a virus. Blogging as a hobby appeals to people of all generations; everyone, from the age of eight to eighty, seem to be interested in the concept. The reason behind this is that the topics of the blogs are of such diverse nature that it has an inborn element of appeal attached to it.

STRUGGLING TOWARD A CONSTANCY TO PURPOSE
| |
| One of the unfortunate realities of our time is the tendency we have of allowing other persons and society define the meaning of success in our lives. In doing so we absolve ourselves from any meaningful internal dialogue and true understanding of who we are and why we were meant to be here or our purpose/mission in life.
Those who regularly read my bulletins know that I have some pretty strong opinions about how we all should live our lives. This statement seems contradictory to my opening remarks but stay with me and I will explain.
I thought it would be interesting for us to examine how four different generations might view success based upon what we have come to know about them and what they value. Perhaps from this cursory examination we might get some ideas for what truly constitutes SUCCESS?

Lesson #2: Practice “restraint in regard to immediate profits”
| |
| Friends and foes alike thought Wrigley Jr. had gone mad at times, giving away free products relentlessly as he was prone to do. But what other saw as irresponsible, Wrigley Jr. saw as a concerted effort to take a long-term view with regard to his business and its success. After all, he had already put in years of hard work learning everything he could under his father, and he was not about to throw in the towel any time soon. |

I’m back and feeling better!
| |
| When the Supreme Technician (that’s me) wanders around the world, speaking, shouting, screaming and whispering the mantra of extreme entrepreneurship and the Age of The Entrepreneur, exhorting everyone in sight to wake up and to see the roses (before smelling them), life takes its toll, oh yes it does, and my voice goes with it, grinding down to dust, to squeals, to scratchy itchings, and with it goes my imagination which says, oh, no, will I ever be able to speak again? |

The Comfort of Memories
| |
| Abraham, Martin and John...mmmmmm as the sounds of this song drift out of my computer (my techno skills are improving!!) and sink into my head, I am transported back many years to a dingy room (not that I thought that then), at the back of a pub, my introduction to discos, then I had to be home when everybody else was coming out, I lived in the middle of nowhere (so I thought) and the last bus went at 10pm. Can you imagine saying that to a youngster today!!!! |

Wellness Revolution
| |
| Most of the adult population, and increasingly the younger generations, certainly of the more developed countries of the world have an enhanced idea of what 'good nutrition' is. Mostly we can understand the equation of eating more food, provides more calories, using less energy to burn off calories, leaves us with a surplus, usually somewhere around the middle of our bodies. We can accept the concept of reducing the intake and even a slight increase of the use of calories, has the reverse effect. So, if we can understand the concept why is it so hard to put into practice? |

The Workplace 2020
| |
| I cannot believe that I am writing anything about the year 2020. It almost sounds like a science fiction movie title and yet it is only ten short years away. I say "short" because this past decade flew by at an inconceivable pace in my own mind. The reality of the present is that 2020 is just around the corner and the corner is getting closer as we speak.

The Talent Exodus
| |
| The pending talent exodus is literally off the radar screen for Dan's company. He is the chief executive for a small company with a rich sixty year history. The niche markets and the specialty products he produces have created a comfortable living for the over four hundred employees and their families. He has veteran employees that have tremendous knowledge and experience in the work they perform. These sometimes thirty year employees have been the backbone of the company for many years. And truthfully, Dan takes the knowledge and experience for granted. No one on the team is thinking about the tremendous loss the team will experience over the next five to ten years.

Best Internet Network Marketing Training System the Secret in Tough Times

Writing Skills Atrophy Among Copycats, And Do-It-Yourself Business Communication Marketing
| |
| One of the best business communication marketing moves I ever made was sending out a monthly newsletter to current and prospective clients. I say that because it's a natural form of self-promotion minus obnoxious hype. You get your name out there -- with a lot of the keywords that attract search engines -- and you give readers an inkling of what you can do for them.
Its value lies in an almost nonexistent "nag quotient." Far too often, I get insistent, "look at me!," "have I got an introductory offer for you!" emails from search engine optimization firms, online degree factories, "experts" in attracting government contracts, weight loss specialists, you name it. Not a one adds an iota to my knowledge of what they offer. Hype is what it is. But a newsletter that gives practical advice is truly effective business communication.

Leadership Lessons: What is Success at Work
| |
| There is a play that made the rounds decades ago called "How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying" in which the hero knew he had "made it" when he got the key to the executive washroom. The young hero was naive on his journey to the top. Yet the pattern handed to him from prior generations is that money is the key to success.
Then decades later there is the film "Wall Street" where money is still the key to success. Yet now the hero is not naive, merely ruthless. It doesn't matter how you get it, so long as you get it. Ethics be damned. Lie, cheat, marry the bosses daughter, marry the boss, just get the money. It seems as a culture this pattern of money as the measure of success continues to be handed from generation to generation with little discussion or redefinition.

The Power of Social Networking
| |
| You’ve all heard of networking right? Most business women don’t ever use it to its full potential. One of the most common reasons is that it’s just one more thing you have to do in your busy day so it goes into the too hard basket, right!
I know I used to do this. With traditional networking, you stand in a room full of complete strangers pretending to have a good time, all in the hope that you will connect with the right people.
Yes, networking can be a nightmare. It can also be a great thing if you get the right environment for you. Networking is all about building relationships and now-a-days I use both online and offline networking, but I get the greatest benefit from online social networking as I can connect with more people in less time. So what is it and how can it benefit you? |

You'll notice that nowhere in that statement was there mention of training, employee development, or rewards and recognition. For many companies, these areas have simply been off the radar. It's time to change this... |
