Degrees of Giving: Leading by Generosity
| |
| When we think of generosity, our thoughts automatically drift to gifts of money or charity. In the context of leadership, there are other gifts that don’t have a monetary value, but whose value is beyond price. These include giving someone a chance; giving someone the benefit of the doubt; and giving others a reason to want to work for you. It entails giving others latitude, permission to make mistakes, and all the information that they need to do the job. It’s giving them the authority that goes with responsibility – it’s giving them due credit for their ideas. In a nutshell, all of this translates to generosity of spirit, a quality we admire in leaders. |

Get a Grip with Others
| |
| I was driving back home after the birth of my grandson, Jorden. The birth, the miracle, the blessing and yet he made me aware of a poignant deficit in our lives. From the minute he was born, that baby wanted to get a grip. It didn't matter if it was Mama's breast or Daddy's finger; he had to get a grip. It was a natural instinct to make a human connection.
I thought about how isolated working people have become today. We don't have time for ourselves let alone others. I remember 31 years ago when my first child was born and how we would go on picnics with our neighbors. If I didn't have pictures of our camping trips I believe I would have sworn we never had time to just take off for days for the woods. No phone? No computer? No kidding!
We'll devote an entire segment on how to Get a Grip with friends later in your book but here we're |

Leaders are Made, not Born
| |
| Imagine picking up your newspaper and finding these announcements in the "Births" section:
BIRTHS
Mr. and Mrs. Blue Collar proudly announce the birth of Jack, a construction foreman. At 13 lbs., 12 oz., he arrived with a bellowing cry and tattoos, and whistling rudely at the nurses.
Wilma and Sam Klutz are sad to announce the arrival of an underachiever. Mia Klutz came complete with slumped shoulders, listless eyes and a whiny cry. Birth was by caesarian section.

Replacing Cash Will Be Slow, Painful, Inevitable
| |
| They're at it again giving us a gazillion good/great even reasons why we might as well forget our checks, cash, credit cards when it's all so fun, easy, rewarding to go with mobile wallets, mobile cash mobile whatever. And you have to admit it sounds fantastic!!! But no one has yet been able to tell us (to our satisfaction) who makes up the difference when some dude/dudette rips us off for our social security number, driver's license, birth date, pin numbers, life.
We're pretty trusting for most folks. We're dumb...not stupid. We know Bonnie & Clyde really existed and we're not in a good enough financial shape to let them steal from us to give to themselves.
