Measure yourself as a manager Go for gold
Going for gold; what does it mean and what is your ‘gold’? You can never achieve anything lasting that is not in your nature. You cannot achieve anything that you have not a natural inclination for, with of course the appropriate mental and physical attributes. A gold medal is nothing without self worth – think of the Olympic athletes, or Tour de France cyclists who cheated, who took performance enhancing drugs, to achieve gold. Gold at any cost is not worth it. Such an attitude demeans the perpetrators and will not allow them to grow as human beings to reach their full natural potential – high, low or indifferent.

Thrill of Victory
To dream and to actually visualize yourself achieving your goals and dreams is a key factor in finding success. During the Olympics athletes have shared stories that early in their lives they actually had drawn pictures of themselves on the podium receiving an Olympic medal. They started early in life visualizing their success and allowed the images to imprint on their minds.

Be Positive, But Realistic
Positive thinking is essential to success, yet so many people just don't have the persistence required to make it work for them. The reality is, most overnight success stories are no such thing. Just because you've heard of someone for the first time doesn't mean they haven't been working for 20 or 30 years or more to get where they are.

A story of inspiration and action for marketers
I love the John Jackson wakeup call in the morning in our business. Some of us need coffee, tea whatever it takes to perk you up first thing in the morning. For me it is the cup of leadership .This morning was no different except we all witnessed John tell a very heart rendering story about his dad who passed away 11 years ago and he became very emotional at one point as he fondly remembered his dad. There were many lessons to be learned from this story and I will share a few of the highlight moments of that call with you.

Chicken or Beef?
As a former national champion Olympic weightlifter, one of my prized possessions is my gold medal. It is a very special momento to me, which I display in my office. Recently, I was traveling on an airplane, and I met a unique gentleman seated next to me. If they ever add an Olympic event called the Marathon Bad Attitude, this gentleman will have a gold medal, too. Shortly after introducing myself, he told me he didn't like the airline we were flying on, the seats, the aisles, or our flight attendant. He went on to inform me he didn't like the city we were in, the airport we were connecting through, or our final destination. I don't think he liked me either, but we didn't get that far into the conversation.

The Need to Achieve
The need to achieve is one of the more visible needs in our society. It fuels performance in the worlds of sports (Gold Medal anyone?), music, politics, media and certainly, business. We all have a need to achieve. At one level or another, everyone wants to succeed at something. An unfulfilled need for achievement leads to frustration, disappointment and a decreased sense of self-worth. Just think of a simple goal of getting to work on time and the silly red traffic light that prevents you from achieving that goal. Yep, you know the feeling, but these are not feelings we want our team (or ourselves!) to have.

Do You have a "Sales Prevention Department?"
When was the last time you met with your sales prevention department? Did you listen closely to what they had to say, the excuses they had, and their plan to mishandle customers in the future? Sales Prevention Departments can masquerade as your advertising, marketing, frontline sales, customer service, phone technology, or any department including accounting.

Low-Tech Sales Tools Rule
Selling success does not require lots of high-tech gadgetry. Snazzy spread-sheets, complicated flip charts, or four-color brochures are not needed. If you have these tools, by all means use them, as long as they do not interfere with why you showed up in the first place-and that is to ask the right questions. One of the major keys to being a sales superstar is being a diagnostician, a highly-effective questioner. The following five low-tech tools make the questioning phase more effective no matter what else you bring to the sales call.

Three Keys to Finding Gold in Your Business
Gold is certainly a hot commodity in today's economy. Any gold you have is worth more today than it was a year ago. I'll bet you have some gold you're not even aware of, right there in your own business. Let's see if we can find it.
