An Open Source Disc-Burning Kiosk
Springwise is running a story on Freedom Toaster. Backed by the Shuttleworth Foundation (behind Ubuntu Linux, the popular open source option to Windows) it’s a free kiosk that allows anyone to put a disc in it and burn a copy of Linux, OpenOffice, and some e-books. It’s a very interesting concept, and it fits perfectly into low, or spotty, bandwidth areas like Africa.

International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Blue Financial Services Group to Integrate HIV/AIDS Prevention with Microfinance
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, announced plans to work with Blue Financial Services Group, a publicly traded African financial services company with over 100 branches in seven countries, on a pilot HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention program in Botswana, South Africa and Zambia. A statement released by the IFC explained that the program will target small companies and local communities, seeking to preserve jobs and businesses by integrating traditional financial services with HIV/AIDS prevention.

Ugandan Government Initiative to Subsidise Solar Power Equipment by 45% to be Implemented by Rural Microfinance Institutions (MFIs)
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) of Uganda, a semi-autonomous public-private partnership created by the Ugandan Government, has announced a 45% subsidy, up from the current 14%, on all solar power equipment. The subsidy will be will be promoted through a network of rural microfinance institutions (MFIs), and non-government organisations (NGOs), who will be providing a cash payout to those who install the solar systems, or a loan or a loan-offset.
IFC and Microfinance in Africa: Building Strong Commercial Institutions
The International Finance Corporation (IFC)-the private sector arm of the World Bank Group-has $4 billion invested in various kinds of financial institutions in 88 countries: including banks, leasing companies, credit rating agencies, and pension funds. IFC also has $256 million invested in 56 microfinance institutions in 38 countries, reaching more than 1.3 million clients. Institutions in Southern Europe, Central Asia, and Latin America currently comprise the lion's share of this portfolio, but Africa is a growing emphasis as well.

One of the leading thinkers about the importance of institutions and rules to making markets work for development, Nobel laureate Professor Douglass North, has explained that societies evolve institutions to “reduce uncertainty by providing a structure to everyday life”. He argues that this is essential to organizing the productive division of labour and that “institutions affect the performance of the economy by their effect on the costs of exchange and production”. He also stresses that many of the rules guiding daily behaviour are informal and that effective institutions for governing markets are a blend of socially accepted norms and laws underpinned by shared values.

As China’s economic engagement with Africa has become more sophisticated, involving more and different players, it has become necessary to look beyond the central government to understand the driving forces behind recent developments. Nobody's Inspired By The Blame Game
Too much time and energy have been spent by the major institutions of our country (news media, infotainment, government) in debating who or what was responsible for the shooting of Gabby Giffords and others on January 8. It hasn't inspired anyone. Not enough time and energy have gone toward considering who or what is responsible for her recovery, described by her own doctors as nothing short of "miraculous"....
If Business Ran Like the Government
The big news these days is the federal government’s debt ceiling. Every time Washington gets into one of these messes - which it does a lot - people renew the discussion about how government should be run. “If I ran my company the way they run the government…” The outcome is usually bankruptcy or prison. Renewing Limited Government: Spending Limits
We have to renew limited government in the United States, or the entire world will enter a new era of darkness the likes of which no one can foresee. And one of the first, if not THE first, is to limit government spending....
