What are the three biggest challenges suppliers face in their efforts to win government business?
Being well into the 7-Part "Seven Steps to Success: Jump Start Government Contracts Series," with expert author Judy Bradt on the PI Window on Business Show on Blog Talk Radio, the launch of the Public Sector Suppliers Forum on LinkedIn and of course the Essential Connections Blog, we seem to have touched on a hot topic that has been simmering for some time. Specifically, the disconnect between the tremendous opportunities afforded companies through government contracting, and the practical realization of said opportunities for the majority of suppliers.

Privatizing Multi-Transactional Supplier Platforms Within the Public Sector (Part 2)
I can recall negotiating a mutli-million dollar contract renewal and being relieved that my organization held an important advantage in that we had developed and owned the growing supply base that was necessary for the third-party provider to meet the delivery and price requirements for a key government client. When I talk about owning the supply base, this included the corresponding intelligence, as well as the technology to maintain its veracity and relevance on a real-time, real-world basis.

Purchasing Management ---- The Driving Force to Maximizing Success during Tough Economic Times
Purchasing managers, purchasing agents and buyers are the life support system of your supply chain. This has become much more apparent during these tough economic times. I often use the phrase in leadership training; "You're only as good as the people you surround yourself with." That phrase also applies to one of the most critical functions in distribution, the Purchasing Manager. So what does being the life support systems to supply chain management mean? It means purchasing is the center of the universe, the equator, the fulcrum when it comes to meeting customer demands. This is a common fact. We all know it. Most of us say it and yet few of us really understand it.

Silo Busting
In the old days we had sales guys and we had marketing guys and we had purchasing guys. The sales and marketing guys hated the purchasing guys. They never bought enough stuff, right? The wagon was never full. A common quote coming from some sales people: . "Our purchasing department sucks; I know there is an extra 5% discount out there. Purchasing is forcing me to sell at these high prices; we are just not buying right." The purchasing guys, in the mean time were saying; "Our sales guys are goofy. They keep saying they can't sell from an empty wagon. They want the wagon so full the wheels will come off. They say-"Put this in and I will sell it" and they never sell it. These kinds of feelings, these quotes were like a tradition. It describes a natural silo between sales and purchasing. It's not really supposed to be funny.

Change starts with you
“Only Government can fix the mess we are in”, President Obama. “Government is the problem…”, Nate McCulloch Gwinnett Daily Post We speak of government as if it were our neighbor, pastor, teacher, friend or foe. It is none of these and yet it is all of these. Government, at any level, is simply an organizational structure and is incapable of any action or activity until people are inserted into the equation. Our founding fathers meant it when they said “of the people, by the people and for the people” So the problem and/or solution lie with us.

How Can I Win Government Contracts? Part 1
I know the government has specific initiatives to recruit and hire small business contractors for governmental projects but how can I get these jobs? I started my search on this topic at the source, the government. On the SBA website there are tutorials on how to apply for and win government contracts. By taking one of these convenient online courses all of my questions were answered. I want to share some of this information but I would also recommend that anyone interested in acquiring government contracts take this online course themselves.

Why Gold Really Is Money
It is an unfortunate historical anomaly where people think the paper in their wallets is money, suggests Mike Farrell with aspenIbiz. Read this short post to understand that money is something that holds value over time and is not subject to devaluation and loss of purchasing power as a result of overspending and a runaway supply of the currency that the government and central banking systems mandates be used as a substitute for money. Also learn about strategies to reduce the risk of further loss of purchasing power.

If Business Ran Like the Government
The big news these days is the federal government’s debt ceiling. Every time Washington gets into one of these messes - which it does a lot - people renew the discussion about how government should be run. “If I ran my company the way they run the government…” The outcome is usually bankruptcy or prison. Should government be run like a business? That’s a debate for another article. But, the surprising thing is many business ARE run like the government. Do you understand how to manage cash flow in your business? Does your company cater to special interests, waste money or time or push problems aside instead of addressing the real issue?

Renewing Limited Government: Term Limits
In America, the "land of the free," the government has run amok. The Founders, who fought (and in some cases, died) to leave a country wherein citizens were to rule and the government was supposed to be limited, would be shocked at the size of the behemoth that is the modern federal government. And many states have just as bloated a bureaucracy....

Renewing Limited Government: Spending Limits
We have to renew limited government in the United States, or the entire world will enter a new era of darkness the likes of which no one can foresee. There are at least ten limits we could impose on government (and, in some cases, on what I see as quasi-governmental U.S. institutions) that would have a remarkable turn-around impact on our economy - and on our society. And one of the first, if not THE first, is to limit government spending....
