Leadership Assessment #16 – Build a Reinforcing Culture
There are hundreds of assessments for leaders. The content and quality of these assessments vary greatly. You can spend a lot of time and money taking surveys to tell you the quality of your leadership. There are a few leading indicators that can be used to give a pretty good picture of the overall quality of your leadership. These are not good for diagnosing problems or specifying corrective action, but they can tell you where you stand quickly. Here is one of my favorite measures. It is the ability to build a reinforcing culture.

Adopt an Emotion: GRATITUDE
Gratitude is a feeling of thankfulness and appreciation. Appreciation and gratitude are interchangeable. In gratitude there is acceptance, love and acknowledgment of “what is”. In gratitude there is spaciousness and connectedness.

Positive Thinking – Appreciate What You Have In Your Life
People often focus on what they want, and not on what they already have. Do you find yourself wishing for this and that, and take what you have for granted? Rather than thinking of what you wish you could have, why not first take some time to reflect on what you have right now?

Leave Memories of Appreciation
What would life be like if you could decide moment by moment your state of mind? What if you could have complete control over your response to any situation life holds for you? What if you could live in the space of gratitude and appreciation regardless of the economy, loss, change or uncertainty? Seem impossible? If not impossible, difficult at best? Living is a state of appreciation no matter what may seem unrealistic and unattainable to many people.

Feeling Grateful
What are you grateful for? Why is it important to answer that question? Gratitude can have a positive affect on your life. Learn how counting your blessings can be beneficial to you.

Don't Forget To Say Thank You
Showing gratitude to your superiors, subordinates, coworkers, clients, potential bosses and anyone else who you come in contact with is very critical to keep the cycle of positive attraction and energy flowing yet it is very overlooked. People hinder their growth and prosperity by neglecting to show gratitude even in the smallest of situations. Below you will find a sample example of how you can effectively show appreciation and adapt this to your own situations. You will find that your clients, friends, employees will respect and call on you more often. The residual effect will be improved business and personal relationships which will result in more profits and an overall higher quality of life.

Simon Fuller’s talents as a businessman have made him a millionaire, something he remains appreciative of to this day. “I'm grateful that my artists and projects are succeeding globally in such a phenomenal way,” he says. The Immigrant\'s Attitude
Some time ago, my associate, Krish Dhanam, and I were returning from an engagement in Tampa, FL, where we had spoken for the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce. The flight was uneventful; we landed at the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, got our luggage and loaded it on one of the rental carts. The walk was fairly lengthy and the first two hundred yards were uneventful; then we came to the moving sidewalks.

Practice Uncommon Appreciation
If asked, could you name the five wealthiest people in the world, or five people who have one the Nobel Prize, or the last five Academy Award winners for best actor and actress? The point is, none of us remembers the headliners of yesterday. When the applause dies, the awards tarnish, and achievements are forgotten, no one cares about who won which award.

Doing Better Than Good!
People frequently ask me, “How can I know when I am doing better than good?” I thought about that question and came up with 15 ways to measure yourself. Take a look and see what you think:

Making the Time
One time we were keeping Timmy, a young cat with a long, fluffy tail for our granddaughter, Sunshine. Somehow he went missing and we spent a considerable amount of time and energy looking for that cat before he was found. That’s typical. Most people pull out all stops to recover a pet or a treasured relationship. We would “do anything” to change some things or to have them back.

Be Grateful
I do try to consciously practice gratitude every day, but certainly Thanksgiving is a reminder to us all.

How to Share Power in a Relationship: The Five Cs of Co-Creation
As a species, we are gradually moving from self-centered, adversarial uses of power to collectively sharing power for the mutual benefit of everyone. We are shifting from a paradigm characterized by "me or them" to "me and them." We are lifting ourselves into the realm of co-creation. It's going to take more than good intentions for us to pull this one off. We're all going to have to learn to think and behave differently in our business-as-usual routines.

To work effectively and profitably in business our 20% input of work should yield 80% output. 1. Where is the 20% input in your daily work either at home or in business that returns 80% rewards? 2. What has to happen in your business to pay attention and focus on that best 80% return? We should act on what inspires us. Sometimes unknown to ourselves, there is a power in us greater than our resistance. Because of this we should feed our inspiration and starve our resistance. Do not rob the world of what you have to share.

An Attitude of Gratitude
Throughout our lives many unwelcome, unfavorable things will happen to us. We will face challenges and circumstances that are very difficult. But we need to be truly thankful. Now I am not suggesting that we walk around grinning from ear to ear like a Cheshire Cat, happy that we have problems. That would make no sense at all. But no matter what problems we face, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of good things that are happening or have happened in our lives and it would be foolhardy to allow this one thing,

Surveys show a high correlation between job satisfaction and liking and respecting workplace superiors, yet few are awarded “Boss of the Year.” So, unless you’re independently wealthy, chances are one day you’ll encounter a difficult boss. How About, THANK YOU?
It started with a turkey. In the early days of a start-up company I once worked for, a plump turkey was a small thank you token given to employees around the holidays. Grateful Thoughts on Business
We are nearing the end of a year that has been obviously challenging for most of us, including even the most ambitious small business owners and entrepreneurs. But the holiday season beginning with Thanksgiving is my favorite time to absorb the past year’s lessons and top up the hope reservoir for the year ahead. We should all devote significant time to listing the things we are grateful for, from the most basic to the most fanciful.

Regardless of the industry, customer service is key to the success of your business. Unfortunately, there are many examples of people whose poor customer service has been memorable: people who have left us on hold and forgotten about us, waitresses who never return to our table, the customer service person who leaves us on the phone for several minutes. We all have experienced poor customer service at some level. This article illustrates how Five Attributes Can Lead to Exceptional Customer Service. I refer to them as the PAULA(sm) Customer Service Success Program.

How Disasters Can Teach Lessons of Gratitude
In the world today, we encounter a lot of negativity, pain, stress and natural disasters. Many days, we wake up with far too much to do, far too much to think about, far too many concerns, and far too many problems. In Virginia where I live, in the span of less than one week, we experienced a "terrible triad:" an earthquake, a tornado and Hurricane Irene; three major natural disasters capable of causing devastation, tragedies, and causalities. So many of us went through life's inconveniences facing another triad of problems: no lights, no air-conditioning, no television. Having witnessed three natural disasters in one week has made me readily come to believe that it is a good idea to start each day with inspiration and gratitude to help us make it through the day with positive thoughts. This helps to remain focused on your goals.
