Smart Cents: How J.C. Penney Built An Empire

Penney once said that there were no secrets to his success, but that the principles of business were simple: “In retailing, the formula happens to be a basic liking for human beings, plus integrity, plus industry, plus the ability to see the other fellow’s point of view.” In 1920, the J.C. Penney Company had over 197 stores along the West coast. Just nine years later, that number had grown to more than 1,400 stores across the country; new stores had been opening at a rapid rate of almost one every three days. Today, the company has grown to be one of the nation’s largest retailers. By the time Penney died at the age of 95, sales for the company he had helped grow finally reached the $5 billion mark. How did he do it?

You’re on show - ethics in sales

| Today people are looking for honesty and authenticity and do not have time to be misled. They want to work with people who are what they say they are. They are assessing your every word and action. They are looking beneath the surface and are wanting to see the real you.
Many people are now more wary about companies and sales people making big claims and promises with lots of ‘sizzle'. They are wary of the ‘charmers' and the sales people after the ‘big kill'. What they are now looking for is the steak and all that comes with it: i.e. what kind of steak is it? How it was it grown, prepared and cooked? Where did it come from? Is it grown in an environmentally friendly, humane manner? etc. They no longer want to confuse packaging with substance. They look for evidence at every turn and how you align with the promises you make.

DON’T SPEAK TO ME LIKE THAT!

When your grown child has a child, he/she can automatically switch his/her own dynamics from child to adult to parent with all that it entails. This unfolds due to changing circumstances that a younger person is faced with on the road to full-fledged adulthood. When your child has a child, he/she is forced to step into another role whereas you stay in the same place, essentially. You become a grandparent but are not saddled with all of the responsibility of having to care for your own child. You continue to see your grown child as your child and perhaps not the parent that they’ve become, with all the angst and worry that comes with it.

Why I No Longer Have a Cell Phone

I have grown up with technology, dating back to the earliest Apple computers in the late 70′s. I have also grown up with cell phones, those used-to-be giant plastic things you tried to hold in your hand. I have been through more cell phones and cell phone companies that I can remember.
