Place Those Small Bets, Quickly!

| Nothing goes so well with that first cup of coffee as having your biases confirmed!
In yesterday's Wall Street Journal ("In Search of Growth Leaders"), University of Virginia/Darden Graduate School of Business Prof Sean Carr, et al., lay out a growth model. There are, more or less, two flavors of companies:

Brokers, Dealers, Private Lenders, and Venture Capital
| |
| A broker is defined as anyone who makes securities transactions for others. (The exception to this is a bank.) A dealer is defined as someone who buys and sells securities for their own account, through a broker or otherwise.
Most entrepreneurs are looking for start-up capital and for someone else to raise capital for them on a straight commission, with no up-front fees. Only registered broker dealers, and Bona Fide employees, can legally solicit/sell securities for a company on straight commission, with no up-front fees. They always charge an up-front retainer, sometimes called due-diligence fees, before commencing. This fluctuates depending on the complexity of the transactions. Most brokers/dealers avoid startup and early stage companies. A Bona Fide employee cannot be paid commission from the sale of securities. |

Origins of NLP
| |
| Back in the 70's NLP started as a meta-model, or a model for making and changing other models. The NLP meta-model focuses on verbal models, and how language both shapes and reflects human thought. The two explained their meta model in The Structure of Magic. They first used the meta-model to find how highly successful therapists like Milton Erickson and Virginia Satir managed to help so many people. They wanted to know:
What language and behavioral patterns did these therapists have?
In Erickson's case, how did he consistently produce deep hypnotic trances?
What happened in the client's mind as they changed?

Uganda - Africa's Newest Investment Darling?
| |
| It is always good to have a positive role model. Especially one who has endured the occasional long and harsh roads and is still here to tell about it. Generally, this type of role model not only earns the respect of their peers; but also gains a stable of followers.
In the African context, if we are talking about recent economic growth amidst large hurdles, it is difficult to disregard Uganda. |

5.2 Is it factor accumulation or total factor productivity that drives growth in Africa?: Economic Report on Africa 2007
| |
| To investigate the link between growth and diversification, it was important to
first quantify the contribution of TFP to economic growth. This section analyses
the sources of growth for African countries using the standard growth accounting
method, making it possible to disaggregate the shares of growth contributed by TFP,
capital and labour. Growth in output is the sum of the growth in capital, labour
and TFP. Capital accumulation is an essential element in the growth process, as it
enlarges the economy’s capacity to produce. Increases in labour or labour force have
traditionally been considered a positive factor in stimulating economic growth. |
