Pinpointing BP's Pitfalls: 8 Ways to Reconnect After a Disaster
| |
| Maribeth Kuzmeski offers advice on how they could have better connected with the public throughout the spill-and explains the lessons you can learn from them.
For the past two months, our eyes have been glued to news of the Gulf Coast oil spill. And with each barrel that gushes into the Gulf, our anxiety and frustration rises exponentially. Much of our ire is aimed squarely at BP. With each day that passes, the oil company is buried deeper in a disaster that will surely be difficult to overcome. And according to Maribeth Kuzmeski, what makes the situation worse is how BP has chosen to connect with the media and the public during these critical days-resorting to misleading information, poor communication, and neglect in order to dodge responsibility for the spill. |

The Power of Words
| |
| In a world so full of "me first" attitudes, it is no wonder we see so much turmoil and dysfunction in the world around us. The financial fiasco being played out on the national stage is evidence that something is seriously wrong. Day after day, words of disaster come at us from all directions; words that instill fear, panic and negativity. News of foreclosures, more bank failures, bail outs totaling billions of dollars...it is no wonder the confidence level of people in our country is the lowest it has been in 28 years. That has to change and it can if we commit ourselves to changing what "we think about" and "what we say" to ourselves and others! |

Rebuilding Through Social Enterpreneurship
| |
| On television in Bangladesh, I watched with great sadness the horrors Katrina unleashed on New
Orleans and the Gulf Coast. I was so tempted to be there to participate in post-disaster activities,
as we have so much experience with these kinds of disasters. But I knew my American friends
did, too. Having studied at Vanderbilt and traveled extensively in the affected areas names of
places and faces of people were so familiar. A friend of mine from Ecuador even sent me a
picture taken in Biloxi 39 years back to remind ourselves that we were there! |

Do You Know Where Your Disaster Recovery Plan Is
| |
| Disasters of major magnitude are major news again after the Gulf coast region of the United States was hit by 2 major hurricanes. So it is very timely for me to ask each of you: “Do you know where your disaster recovery plan is?” “Do you even have a disaster recovery plan or crisis management plan?” “What business contingency plans do you have?” I am very concerned that in too many cases the answers would be “No” “No” and “None!”
The plain hard truth is that if your business is going to continue to perform at a profitable or administratively adequate level when a crisis occurs, crisis/emergency planning is imperative. You must have a properly prepared disaster recovery plan in place and have the appropriate staff fully briefed on their responsibilities. |

Business Solutions to Hunger in Africa
| |
| The father of Bata Shoe Foundation's Chairman Thomas J. Bata once reportedly dispatched two emissaries to quietly investigate business growth potential in Africa. Returning from the east coast one warned: "Don't bother, it's a complete waste of time here. I mean, people are going around barefoot.” The other landed on the west coast and enthused: "It's wonderful here. The opportunities are unlimited. Everyone is still barefoot!"

Doctors and nurses soon will no longer have to worry when giving injections, thanks to Jack Dillard and his company, Protectus Medical Devices, Inc. His patented invention will soon be saving the lives of nurses, as he has designed a syringe with a special spring, which for the first time automatically covers needles with a plastic sheathing if they’re ever dropped or mishandled, thus eliminating accidental needlesticks that nurses are always prey to when using or disposing of syringes.
