Using Mistakes Successfully
Each of us at one time or another has thought about how wonderful it would be to have as much foresight as hindsight. Then we could avoid making mistakes! Not only is that hope unrealistic, it's also unwise. Mistakes are often the springboard for major accomplishments. Here's a good example:

Too small to fail
One secret of being a large financial institution is that you can take huge risks because you're too big to fail. If you hit craps and lose it all, don't worry, because you'll get bailed out.

In the Thrall of Procrastination
The last weeks of August are bittersweet for me as I say farewell to summer, my favourite season. I experience September as a month of new beginnings, likely harking back to my school years – but without the new erasers and pencil crayons. In this month’s newsletter I share some insights about to-do lists prompted by an impromptu closet makeover. I hope you enjoy the results of cleaning out your to-list and getting it ready for the ‘new year’ as much as I enjoyed cleaning out my closet.

Stop Blaming Sales!
If sales isn't responding - then marketing is responsible. Marketing's role is to give sales the tools and training they need to sell the company's solutions. It's also marketing's role to get them excited about the newest offerings. So the next time someone starts to blame sales for lack of product acceptance in your customer base or for discounting deals that don't generate the margin or results you expected - think again. It's most likely sales is doing the best they can with what they've been given.

5 Timestealers You Must Avoid
Gary has a business, employing 7 staff. When he contacted me he was at a point where the stress from his business was so bad, that he would constantly wake up 3 or 4 times a night worried about everything ...his cash flow, staff, lack of clients and the affect all this was having on his personal well-being and family life. He didn't use a diary, had no way of planning and kept everything 'in his head'.Often his staff were idle because he hadn't spent time training them. That ensured the work didn't get done therefore causing Gary to lose clients.

Is Your Business Still Heading Towards The Goals You Set At The Start?
Every business owner needs to step back a little every so often and critically look at their business; the way it performs; the service it offers; the prices charged and ensure it is still running directly towards the ultimate goals that were in your head when you first set it up. Who Should Your Sales Force Call On
It's not always obvious. If your company sells oil drilling rigs to oil companies, then your salespeople know who to call on. If your company sell luxury cars to wealthy people, you know where to find your prospects. But what if you sell products or services that could be sold to a much broader range of customers or clients? Who should your salespeople call on then?

10 Steps for Your Sales Force to Survive and Thrive in the Recession
I was in the pool, playing catch with our six-year old son, when Henry began a "dialog" with me. He said, "You can't play catch in the pool. It's against the rules." I was stunned, but apologized, said I wasn't aware of that rule and removed the football from the pool. There was another guy in the pool and he mentioned to me that the pool rules did not include an exclusion about playing catch. I mentioned that to Henry and he became irate because he owns one of the resort's units, wrote the rules himself, and said, "It better be on that sign!" So what's wrong with this picture?

Sales Force Motivation - Learn from the Red Sox' Miraculous Comeback
If you observed the Tampa Bay fans during game 1 in St. Petersburg and game five in Boston, you would have observed some very tense, anxious people. Rest Relaxation and Recreation
During a vacation this past year I came up with an exciting new coaching program (Value Program) for my business. I wasn’t planning to do this on my vacation. I hadn’t set aside some work time at my computer. I hadn’t even brought a notebook to jot down ideas. I really didn’t expect to have any notable thoughts! It just happened as I took my regular morning walk each day. The ideas just flowed in.

Can Realtors Use Joint Ventures?
When Rika and I sold houses years ago, we did well. Because we used Joint Ventures. The first house I sold, I hadn’t even seen before. Worse still, I had never even read the contract. I got buyer to help me understand the contract! We sold a lot. How?

GETTING THE STRAIGHT SCOOP
Win or lose, how diligent are you in placing a call to get feedback from your clients about why they did or didn’t choose you? There is so much to learn — whether to identify strengths you hadn’t even recognized as such that you can use to win future business, to know what appeals most to your client so you can be extra sure to deliver on that, or to correct misses and prevent them from happening to sink future deals.

How to Develop Your Book’s Structure
A man came to me last week because he needed help writing his book. He told me that he’s had this project on his to-do list for years, but he just couldn’t seem to get started. He’s literally been staring at the task—start writing my book—almost every day, and when he came to me, he still hadn’t done it.

Bungling Bonnie Raitt, or “How to Handle Challenges, Learning Curves, and Breakdowns in Your Business.”
Oh, it was ugly! I hadn’t been out singing karaoke in a few months, so when my gal pal Andrea asked me to go to sing recently, I decided to try a song I’d never sung before – the rather drippy but beautiful Bonnie Raitt ballad, “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” It’s a fabulous song when it’s done well, but for whatever reason, I wasn’t on my game. When I got up to sing, I immediately hit the wrong note, and stayed off key for the first few verses. Yikes! Karaoke - on stage, with all those folks watching. Having that mic in your hand, it’s sort of one of those sink or swim moments. Just like business sometimes.

Consensus Building Can Be Too Much of a Good Thing
There are a lot of upsides to building consensus in organizations, and generally, it tends to be very good for company culture and morale. However, it does have its downside too in that it also increases the chances that nothing will get done. Now, I’m all for enlisting the opinions of others, and happen to personally enjoy weighing multiple perspectives against one another in order to learn something new or see something in a way I hadn’t seen it before. But sometimes instead of helping, the exercise of pursuing “agreement,” does more to hold things back. Why? Because it’s not very often that everyone agrees, especially as the size of a group increases. So while “consensus” is “in” and considered politically correct, it can also be equally as unrealistic a goal if it is not exploited properly.

Take Note
I would like to focus on something, that at first glance, may appear rather trivial. In fact it might seem so inane that you are wondering why I am even writing about it. It’s ‘note taking’. I learnt a very salient, if not embarrassing, lesson in my early 20’s. When in my first sales consulting role I turned up to a sales meeting with a prospective client with no obvious note taking materials. Up until that time I had never been told to take notes by my managers. I hadn’t thought about talking notes myself. I relied on my memory.

Guest Post: From Nateedmondson.com
I don’t want to publicly criticize anyone in particular, so I’m going to try and be careful with this explanation, but the reason I started thinking about this whole “God thing” idea is because of a recent use of the phrase that I thought seemed a little skeptical. There was an event that had been planned for months and about a week or so before a few details hadn’t been worked out yet. Thankfully everything ended up working out and the event was a success. After the event was underway and all systems were functional one of the leaders of this event made the statement, “man.. it’s just really a God thing. We had a lot of last minute details fall through on us and I’m just so pleased God worked everything out to his glory..”

Exploring Inner Space
An ass found a lion's skin, and dressed himself up in it. Then he went about frightening every one he met, for they all took him to be a lion, men and beasts alike, and took to their heels when they saw him coming. Elated by the success of his trick, he loudly brayed in triumph. The fox heard him, and recognized him at once for the ass he was, and said to him, "Oho, my friend, it's you, is it? I, too, should have been afraid if I hadn't hear your voice."
