“You cannot push anyone up the ladder unless he is willing to climb,” said Andrew Carnegie. Indeed, Carnegie was more than willing to climb that ladder, reaching new heights of success in his adopted home of America. The decision to accept credit cards is a wise one for any retailer. I agree with financial guru Dave Ramsey's teachings regarding the use and abuse of credit cards. But, from a practical business point of view, any retail business that does not accept credit cards is leaving money on the table.

Stop Tolerating Things that Drain away Your Time and Energy
Tolerations are like a dull headache or stiff neck that never quite goes away. You learn to live with it and each day you climb over the annoyance and get your work done anyway. It is not until something happens to remove the headache or stiff neck that you realize how much energy and pleasure has been sapped from your daily life. The sad thing is that, removing these tolerations is not all that hard or expensive, it just requires awareness and a decision to be done with “it” or “them” and taking action. So TODAY is the day and NOW is the time to uncover your tolerations and start reducing and eventually eliminating them from your life!

The Hard Sell
I declare right up front that I am not, and never have been a fan of the Hard Sell. You have probably guessed that from all my previous posts. And if you ask most people about what they think about the profession of selling they will often describe something akin to the ‘Hard Sell'. Of late I have also noticed a rise in ‘hard sell' stories where people are being unnecessarily pressured to buy or sales people being pressured to sell at almost any cost. The hard times may be pushing some people to do things they wouldn't normally do like the "Hard Sell".

Lessons from the Top of the World
Recently, I have been reading quite a bit about expeditions on Mount Everest. I am intrigued by the fact that so many people over the years have been driven to climb the tallest mountain on earth and stand on the top of the world. While studying the expeditions, I have been amazed at how much time, preparation, and energy goes into getting to the mountain with all of the equipment necessary to make the climb and to set up each of the base camps along the route. An expedition is literally years in the planning stage and months in the preparation stage before an attempt can be made on the summit.

Sure, the economy is tough, and it's hard to run a successful business even when times are good. You have to make a lot of good decisions, minimize your mistakes, delight your customers, motivate your team. In any time or place, it can seem like an uphill climb.
