Heed the Dalai Lama -- and Fortune Magazine
| |
| The Dalai Lama says:
“One can be deceived by three types of laziness:
the laziness of indolence, which is the wish to procrastinate;
the laziness of inferiority, which is doubting your capabilities;
and the laziness that is attached to negative actions, or putting great effort into non-virtue.”
I really like this quote because it drives home an important point about personal responsibility and becoming an outstanding performer. The Dalai Lama doesn’t let us off the hook by saying, “I didn’t think I could do it.” Instead, he says that doubting our abilities is a form of laziness. That’s some tough love!

They get great satisfaction from working hard and seeing the results of their labor. |

Hard Work and Success -- One Follows the Other
| |
| The point here is simple -- and sobering for those who are looking for career success shortcuts. Be willing to go the extra mile. Create custom resumes for every job for which you apply. Once you get a job, work harder than others. Volunteer for unpopular jobs -- and then do a great job. Yes, if you want to become an outstanding performer, it's important to be a lifelong learner, set and achieve high goals, and get organized. But it's also important to do something a lot simpler -- and totally in your control; be willing to work hard. Hard work will help build your brand and put you at the top of the promotion list, and bottom of the layoff list. |

You know how it is … some nights you lay there in bed tossing and turning trying to figure out how you can increase your sales just an additionally $10k each month to afford that new employee, or maybe to simply stop ending up in the red each month. That dog won’t hunt
| |
| Here we are at the end of March already. I was talking with a friend the other day about an old farmer’s adage we used to anticipate in March regarding the weather: “In like a lamb, out like a lion.” Or “In like a lion, out like a lamb.” The expectation was that if we had harsh winter weather at the beginning of March we would have mild weather at the end – and vice versa. I have no idea why that is expected but it reminds me of all the little clichés that we accept as reality. As farmers we also used to cite, “Red in the morning, sailors warning; red at night, sailors delight.” |

Activity vs. Productivity

| Most of us work very hard. We get up each day and spend eight hours or more doing something

Hard Work: It Really is Worth it
| |
| In Kevin Sheedy’s book Stand Your Ground his old coach, Tom Hafey wrote the Forward. He explained that Kevin realised that sport could offer him so many opportunities but they would only be realised if he worked not just as hard as anyone else but harder. This need to work harder was because Kevin did not have the same natural skills as most of his team mates and opponents. Thanks to my parents’ hard work me and many like me in Australia and other wealthy countries have been given a opportunity to live a wonderful, happy comfortable life. The downside of this great gift is not experiencing the hard work that went into creating it and therefore potentially not valuing it as much as it should be valued |

Social Disease
| |
| I have always subscribed to the philosophy of “work hard - play hard”. But I always separated my play FROM my work. What I am referring to is my resistance to socialize with my employees or management peer groups as I worked my way up the corporate ladder. There is an inherent danger in creating a social environment within the workspace that spreads to the after work space. This almost ALWAYS ends badly.
Here is my list of No-No’s:

Hard Work, Outstanding Performance and Success
| |
| Outstanding performance is an important key to career and life success. As Malcolm Gladwell points out, outstanding performers are hard workers. They know what they want and do whatever it takes to get it. They enthusiastically act on their dreams. This action helps them reach their goals. There is no way around hard work. You have to put in the time and effort if you want to be successful. Ask any "overnight success." Everyone that I've ever met tells me that they spent years and years getting to the place where they became an "overnight success." Set your goals. Work hard. Work smart. And you'll succeed.
