Who Do You Know?

When building any business it is just a matter of the number of people you talk to about your business. If you are not comfortable talking to people, especially, total strangers, you have to get over that. Then once you can talk to people, you need to know how to handle rejection, because it will surely happen. So, the challenge is going to be to handle it and then move on. However, that isn't always so easy.

People Skills

So many times throughout my life I’ve heard the phrase ‘people skills’ used. What exactly are people skills? Hitting a golf ball for distance and accuracy is a skill. Quilting is a skill. After thinking about it long enough, I think that I would define people skills as having an approachable personality, the ability to listen, knowing how to talk to people, being able to resolve conflicts, and being able to admit mistakes and take responsibility.

What Cold Calling Taught Me and Why I don't do it anymore.

| "Hey, Diane. This is Michele. How's it going?" Sound familiar? If you've said those words before, you most likely have done cold calling. It taught me something that took me by surprise. It catapulted me into a direction I didn't see coming.

Taboo Topics: Talking Politics in the Office

Conventional wisdom says not to talk about sex, politics and religion in the office. The problem is that any office, workplace or organization is mostly made up of people and if the volume of blogs, internet sites, magazines and other media is any indication of popularity, people love to talk about: SEX, POLITICS AND RELIGION!

The Impact of Culture on Acquisitions

In another article, I talk about the rate of failure of mergers and acquisitions being 91%. What I did not talk about was the primary cause of these failures. It is actually quite simple. Most of these transactions, commonly referred to as M&A, are driven by finances and financial calculations. Unfortunately that has nothing to do with the daily business of doing business for any organization. It is the people that matters, and it is a failure of recognizing the people, or culture, that cause most M&A transactions to fail. In this article, I talk about how to avoid this fatal mistake.

The Sky is Falling-Run and Hide?

Ever since the financial sector crisis in America began, there's been a cloud of pessimism and fear reaching over the land. Here in Canada, I listen to business people talk about recession. Businesses big and small are cutting back on expenses, laying-off staff. The talk is even gloomier in the States. Many younger business people seem completely thrown off balance, while those of us a little older, look to be hunkering down to wait out the coming storm. What a great opportunity.

Don't Be Ashamed....

As a Minnesota home based entrepreneur, I get to talk to a lot of people about their potential future also as a home based entrepreneur. One of my specific areas of business is network marketing; which is also THE largest group of clients that I work with. Although, most people are not cut out for an entrepreneurial career anyway, I hear a lot of excuses as to why these people choose to stay an employee and not take control of their financial futures. The one excuse that I want to talk about today is being ashamed to tell others what they would be doing as a network marketing professional or being recognized as "different" because they wouldn't have to wake up every morning and drive to a job like everyone else.

Change Your Self Talk - Change Your Results

The problem is that most of our self-talk is negative. And even worse, we tend to believe our self-talk and that influences our performance - in a big way. For example, have you ever stopped to listen to your self-talk after you missed a sale?
