Lesson #4: Do Not Sit Around and Wait for Something to Happen
| |
| When Hall first moved to Kansas City in 1910, he had no grand thoughts of becoming a millionaire or even creating a company of any significant success. All he wanted to do was make a living, and he thought Kansas City was the perfect place for a hard-working young man to do just that. |

Act In Spite of Your Mood
| |
| "I don't 'feel' like it", is a common chant we often say to ourselves or to others when we're tired, not in the mood, or simply procrastinating. No doubt feelings are important and need to be acknowledged, yet at the same time, they often prevent us from taking the action we need to take, at the time we need to take it. Consequently, in the end, because we didn’t do what we needed to do, we tend to feel worse. |

Locating Prospects
| |
| In the sea of information that is the internet and the ever growing networked communities we live in, you could essentially get a sales lead from anywhere. In principal this sound great. You always have someone to call on or prospect too.
However having too many choices can often lead to feelings of being overwhelmed by too much information. And when you have too much information this can lead to indecision and subsequently inaction. And inaction is the NUMBER 1 killer of any sales prospecting strategy. |

Computing Without the Hardware…Software…Support…Fun
| |
| Today's Web 2.0 social media environment offers a tremendous opportunities for companies to closely engage with customers, prospects and market segments in a positive, mutually beneficial manner. The problem arises when marketing and communications people view these new 1:1 outlets as a great marketing/sales and PR pitching opportunities. They forget that the individuals if not treated properly and with professional respect can turn and instead of being the ones who are being hunted can become the hunters. People -- regular folks -- can be mean and brutal if they are abused. Marketeers need to know the pros/cons, challenges/opportunities. Consumers need to know that they have a powerful platform to strike back and cause real damage.

Profitable Online Business Ideas and the Recession; Persistence
| |
| I believe that next to inaction, the lack of persistence is one of the biggest reasons for failure in this industry. Lack of action and inconsistency can destroy your business before you even get started and at any time after you get started. But enacting both and staying consistent with your work habits can lead to tremendous rewards. I would like to share a personal experience on both. |

Revising the Forbes Message of the Day for the Sales Force
| |
| The Forbes Success Calendar for 2/25/09 said, "Action and reaction, ebb and flow, trial and error, change - this is the rhythm of our living. Out of our overconfidence, fear; out of our fear, clearer vision, fresh hope. And out of hope, progress." - Bruce Barton
I think this quote requires a serious revision - for the sales force and for the company.
First, let's make it shorter. |

Virus Attacks Online Entrepreneurs
| |
| Entrepreneurs will be an endangered species if this pervasive virus continues to spread unchecked. Unsuspecting entrepreneurs are caught in its grip and are slowly but surely being consumed by this deadly virus. Highly contagious, this virus is spread in much the same way that a computer virus spreads from one system to the other. The initial symptoms are so subtle, while the virus establishes itself, that only very observant colleagues would even notice. Low energy levels, irritability, decreased attention and focus which leads to confusion, are the first indication that something is wrong. Symptoms are often attributed to a bad day or a short night of sleep. |

Are you Proactive or Procreactive™?
| |
| Experience tells me that the primary force separating successful from unsuccessful people is action. Successful people act, while unsuccessful people don’t. Achievers do what failures beg off doing. Chinese proverbs put it this way: “Talk will not cook rice,” or “Man who waits for roast duck to fly into mouth will wait a very, very long time.” |

Broken Teams Damage Your Business

When a Muzzle Isn’t an Option
| |
| It’s critical that professionals know how to handle difficult people they encounter in the workplace … especially when it’s the boss or others in management. Chances are there’s always going to be at least one person that you’ll come across in your career (or, even every day!) who drives you mad. Understanding how to relate to people you find difficult is especially critical since, on average, we spend more waking hours with our coworkers and clients than we do with our families and friends.

Cloud Computing -- Computing Without the Hardware…Software…Support…Fun
| |
| The concept is great everything is handled for you in the cloud...you can focus on work and not updating, rebooting your system (yeah like Macs don't
have that problem too). You can grab/store anything/everything and never have to worry about buying a new HD or losing your storage. It's all done
in the cloud.
Problems are though:
- governments have just relaxed the laws on tapping into your (or someone else's system because...well they can
- sounds like Startrek..."To bravely go where no man has gone before..." Nope think we'll be #2
- don't clouds often hang around mountains and if your work is flying through one of them...WHAP!
- of course you know who's in charge of the cloud and maintaining "your" computing, "your" data/content

"When the Pupil is Ready the Teacher Will Appear" --Business Coaching 101
| |

In a time of global competition and information over load, maintaining one’s personal balance while supporting the motivation and direction of the team can become difficult to say the least. Day to day pressures often prevent us from standing back and making a fresh assessment of where we are and what’s the best course to set for tomorrow. Like wise, as the role of the servant leader emerges as a model for greatness, it compels us to seek new ways to refine our business acumen. |

Learning Organizations is Action Oriented
| |
| Execute. Implement. Stop talking and do something. Actions speak louder than words. If you have a learning organization, it needs to be a doing organization too. No matter how you put it, the evidence is rolling in: The distinction between so called “old economy” and “new economy” companies are overblown. Regardless of industry, knowing what to do isn’t enough. Those companies and business units that dominate their competitors win by turning knowledge into action. |

How to Spend It: Making the Most of Aid
| |
| Africa can absorb and manage increased aid flows. That was the consensus expressed at the plenary session. In his introductory remarks, Graham Mackay, Chief Executive, SABMiller, United Kingdom; Co Chair of the Africa Economic Summit 2005, made clear his view that there is no realistic alternative to continuing aid, with a doubling of flows needed over the next three to five years. This, though, he warned, runs against the present current of declining flows. |
