With Blown Call, Jim Joyce Succeeds at a Sales Core Competency
| |
| The certain perfect game is just like the sure things that your salespeople report. "We're gonna get this business - it's a slam dunk." Or, "Everything has been agreed to - just waiting for final approval." Or, "We're the only ones they're talking to - it's ours for the taking!" And then...it isn't. |

The Essence of Ethics
| |
| It's difficult to define, exactly, what ethical behavior is; and it's impossible to measure. But we can sense when ethics are present in an individual or a company culture - and especially we sense it when they're not. Ethical behavior is a two-way street. The Effect of Elections on Small Business
| |
|
Over the years I have closely observed small businesses on the lead-up to an election. There are some very clear business trends that smart small businesses need to know and work within. Elections also provide businesses with a money-can’t-buy education on the latest in marketing trends.

The most obvious is a business to government slow down – by that I mean in the lead up to an election the incumbent political party goes into caretaker mode and generally will not make any significant decisions or grant major contracts. If your business is one that relies on government contracts – you need to plan for this slow down to kick in at least 6 months before the scheduled election due period.

Overcoming "Breakup Reluctance"
| |
| For most of us, acquiring new customers means that we have to take the business away from an incumbent source. Countless prospects are lost when potential new accounts get cold feet over the thought of the potentially uncomfortable conversation needed for parting company with their long time source. They simply can't break their bad habit. Or to paraphrase the old Terryton cigarette ads, "they'd rather avoid the fight than switch". |

Is supplier incumbency a major problem with government contracting?
| |
| When you consider the fact that a good many government procurement experts - including those involved with the procurement process itself, have routinely suggested that 90% of all contract winners are decided before an RFP is actually issued (check out the Al Gordon interview under the Videos Tab of this Portal), one cannot help but wonder if it is worthwhile to pursue opportunities for which there is an already established relationship with an incumbent supplier.
