Small Business Tips: Mid Year Business Review
| |
| I love the end of the financial year and that is not because I spent so many years at the Treasury Department! In January we set New Year’s resolutions but we often set them without clear indicators of success. If this is you, consider that money is one very tangible indicator of success - it is by no means the only indicator, but it is an easy one to measure. Where you are financially is a direct result of where you are emotionally, physically and spiritually.

Success from The Inside Out
| |
| Everyone wants to be successful but few people take the time and effort to define success on their own terms. We are bombarded by messages about what success looks like: owning the right car, living in a certain neighborhood with a certain size house, closing the big deal, becoming well-known, or growing your company to a certain size. While these are certainly fine goals, they offer only a restrictive view of success. To complicate the issue, many of us also get the message that our level of success means something fundamental about who we are – about our worth and value as human beings. Rationally we know that this is ridiculous; however, so many of us operate as if it’s true and as a result, we try harder and harder to prove we are successful according to these superficial standards. There is a better way. |

Abstract - Factors Impeding the Poverty Reduction Capacity of Micro-credit: Some Field Observations from Malawi and Ethiopia
| |
| In most African countries women tend to account for an average 51% of the population, and
make up about 65% of the rural labour force. Thus, many rural based micro-finance programmes
have attempted to address the women specific need for micro-credit. This paper analyses the
effectiveness of micro-credit as a means to reducing poverty, with particular focus on women,
and demonstrates, through the critical analysis of some country-specific examples, that the use
and supply of micro-credit does not always lead to a sustainable impact on household or female
poverty reduction. Analysis of findings are done based on field data, interviews, and observations
from Malawi and Ethiopia. |

Personalization of Search and SEO: Lost in the Shuffle
| |
| Important components of search marketing have always been and will always be increasing quality traffic, increasing sales, and increasing profit. These are the ultimate indicators of success for any search marketing campaign. The introduction of personalized results for users does not change the importance of these indicators or goals in any way.
Notwithstanding the above comments, what should not get lost in the cacophony of opinions about the personalization of search is the fact that something significant is different in this new era. What you have with personalized search results is not a totally different set of pages returned from user to user for the same search, but rather a shuffling of the results. If the former were the case, then search engines would need a different algorithm for each user. |

Balanced Scorecard: Measuring the Important Stuff
| |
| The Balanced Scorecard was devised by Robert Kaplan and David Norton in the early nineties. It began with the premise that an exclusive reliance on the financial indicators such as profit and loss was causing the managers and owners of businesses to do the wrong things. Subsequently it was seen as a tool to measure the success of implementing strategies or implementing good ideas. The financial indicators are great at telling us how a business has performed in the past what the Balanced Scorecard does is supplement this with measures that indicate how the business will perform in the future. |
