Organizational Alignment: The Importance of Building HR Infrastructure
Companies seem to inherently value the role, presence and necessity of infrastructure when it comes to their technology, financial and other operational systems. But human resources is a vital a system too, one that provides just as much support to a business as any other, if not more. Yet often times HR gets overlooked because it’s considered “soft” which usually translates into “less important.” Except, how can the very system upon which all others depend not be important?

Five Ways Forward-Thinking Leaders Are Using The Recession To Build and Reposition Their Teams for Rapid Growth
Over the past eight weeks, I have been interviewing CEO’s of Team Cultures for my upcoming book and have learned some great tips to share with you about how they are strategically benefiting from the economic downturn. Just like the TIGERS universal team values, these tips offer common sense solutions that many individualistic cultures will find difficult to implement due to burdensome hierarchies and competitive infrastructure.

Lesson #1: Build Byte By Byte
“I've learned from experience that a company can grow too fast,” says Dell. “You have to be careful about expanding into new businesses because if you get into too many too quickly, you won't have the experience or the infrastructure to succeed.”

Lesson #4: “This is such a titchy bit of the iceberg”
The forecasts for the Mitels, Ciscos, and Nortels of the world have not always been kind. Indeed, many experts have long predicted that their inflated bubble is about ready to collapse. But Matthews has never been one to listen to the experts.

The Semantic Web Can Be Your Friend
Alex Iskold, the founder and creator of Adaptive Blue, has a long and helpful post up titled Semantic Web: Difficulties with the Classic Approach. I have a small investment in Adaptive Blue (Union Square Ventures is the lead investor), love what Alex is up to, and relish anything that comes out of his brain.

New Tools Make it Easier to Book Sales Meetings
Tools are becoming a more important part of the sales infrastructure and there is no shortage of them. With so many sales tools available and such a big percentage of them being new, how do you know which ones to use and whether they are any good? Today I'll share two tools with you. One is brand new - the launch is today - and the other is fairly new - I found it a month ago. Both tools will help you get into new opportunities more quickly, more easily and with more fun!

10 CEO's and the Impact They Have on their Sales Forces
I don't mean to paint a picture that depicts CEO's as the problem, but in some companies, they are the problem. In 9 of the 10 examples I described above they were the problem but unlike this article, it happens in only about 50% of the cases, not 90%. So if you are a CEO or know one, what should you do when getting help for your sales organization?

CARBON EMISSIONS ARE LIKE CHOLESTEROL
In seminars around the world, I have talked about how carbon emissions are analogous to “fat” in a diet… It is something we don’t want, but is often an unavoidable part of our daily lives. We can accumulate fat on our bodies in many ways, but mostly through “bad” habits. Although challenging, we can change our habits and slowly get rid of the fat. The same is true with carbon emissions… fossil fuels have been our “bad” habit. We can consciously wean ourselves off in a planned manner, or we may have to hastily quit due to supply shortages, energy and/or carbon price spikes, climate impacts, wars or any number of other reasons which we cannot yet see.

Healthcare Leadership in Uncertain Times
Many healthcare leaders have sat out the year waiting for new legislation from Washington. They believe this gives them certainty and comfort. But healthcare leaders face daunting challenges and great uncertainty. This article provides initial advice how to proceed.

Is Your E-Rep Any Good?
As a sales rep, you know better than anybody what your customers and prospects need to know. You’ve done your research. You know their issues, challenges and objectives. You know the value they could accrue by using your stuff. They just won’t take the time to meet with you and listen! Well, maybe it’s you that needs to listen up. I think there’s a question that needs answering…

8th of the 10 Kurlan Sales Management Functions
Systems and processes are your sales infrastructure - everything that is not your people. A lot of us use the two words interchangeably. So what is the difference between systems and processes?

Go E#$% yourself!
As a sales rep, you know better than anybody what your customers and prospects need to know. You've done your research. You know their issues, challenges and objectives. You know the value they could accrue by using your stuff. They just won't take the time to meet with you and listen! Well, maybe it's you that needs to listen up. Are they telling you to...

Human Resources; How much is enough? A Controversial Perspective
If your HR staff is not providing key reports and developing programs and strategies that either reduce your costs or increase revenue in some way, then you don’t need them at all. I mean that. But assuming you have, or will hire, a Human Resources professional that does or will make recommendations that contribute to the bottom line, the answer is “it depends”.

Preparing for Recovery
The economic upheaval of the past year has undoubtedly impacted your business in some manner, and we can only imagine what the journey will be like for the next couple of months. The government and the media tell us the economy is turning around, and we're all hoping that's true. Whether it's the latter part of this year or the first quarter of next year, the question is, are you ready?

Why Most Sales Training Doesn't Work
If you invest in sales training, especially now, you also need it to work now, not in 12 months. Why does it take so long for most sales training to make a difference and why does most sales training fail to make the difference you expect? There are a lot of possible reasons and I'll attempt to explain them here.

2009 Cold Calling Checklist
If we listen to the media, 2009 is shaping up to be a tough year. People are losing jobs and homes and businesses are struggling. A tough economy, however, does not mean that no one will ever buy anything or that no business at all will be done in 2009. What it does mean is that business owners and sales professionals will need to adjust tactics to survive: They will need to become more proactive and more efficient at finding new opportunities.

Service Interaction
In your business, the difference is……? What makes a modern business? Today business needs to re-invent itself and find a niche. Business is about networks. Business is about helping your customer achieve their goals. Business is about thinking differently about the way things have been done. The trouble is, businesses don’t fully understand the areas of a business that make it happen. In most cases there are three things that are needed to make a business a success, assuming that the company has a solid cash-flow.

A NEW FINANCIAL ARCHITECTURE FOR CRISES PREVENTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE INFRASTRUCTURE AND SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES AND CRAFTS (SMEs) in the République of Gabon - Union-Work-Justic
The WUSME Delegation during its mission to Gabon 31 Jan - 5 Feb 2011 learned that presently no affordable programs for Micro-financing are available in the Republic of Gabon. BGFI Bank informed us that loans are been offered to SMEs at 18% annual interest plus cost of insurance against bankable guarantees. These conditions are unaffordable to SMEs and Crafts. There might be forthcoming special programs sponsored by UN Organisations, Worldbank or other Sponsors, but such single programs would only be available during a short period of time and are hence not sustainable. („Drop - on a hot stone - actions"). The Parliament of the Republic of Gabon shall decide tax law for imposing a tax of proposed 0,05% on all currency transactions of Banks, Fx-Brokers and Money Transfer Companies, e.g. WESTERN UNION.

Why buy an existing business?
With a multitude of options to choose from, the relevant question will be which type of small business you should wish to acquire. It can become somewhat overwhelming with all of the possibilities.

Degrees of Trust
Trust is an interesting word. We tend to think of it as a singular concept, like how much do I trust my boss at the moment. I believe there are numerous different types of trust in our lives, and in any trust situation, there are infinite levels of trust. That complexity is one of the reasons why high trust is hard to find in many organizations.

So you are exploring the option of franchising your business, be careful of who you use. Not all Franchise Development companies are the same.

I see many organisations every week that simply see IT as a cost. This thought bothers me, as if engineered correctly the benefits of an IT investment can be clear, dare I say it ‘exciting’ for a business. Turning you business into a franchise
There are very essential questions that you must ask yourself before entering into the fanchise sector. They are not quetions that you would expect your solicitor or account to ask, but they need to be asked as you are about to become intrinsicaly involved with a number of people who will trust and follow you. Morals and ehtics are not words that are used often in business and are often concidered as 'wimpish'or of no consequence in the world of business. In franchising they are essential. If you do not give them the attention that they deserve, you will not remain a Franchisor for long. We all know that bad news travels at twice the speed of light and good news travels on horse-back. A disatified and unhappy Franchisee will tell the world and your dreams of wealth in franchising will tumble like the walls of Jerico.

The data storage prayer
On a lighter note. For those who follow or are involved with data storage religiously with a passion, then this is for you. As for others who do not get or understand what this is about, just ask those who are devout data storage followers. Now I lay my data to sleep I pray the lord my backups to keep If a disk should die before I wake I hope like heck RAID works and my resume is up to date Nuff said, now get back to work or what ever it was you were doing before reading this and best wishes! Cheers gs

Do you practice "Business @ The Speed of Thought?"
Member Question: Almost 10 years ago, Bill Gates of Microsoft wrote a book titled "Business @ The Speed of Thought" where he laid out his vision for how organizations should utilize technology to become more responsive, adaptive, agile, etc. Specifically he drew an analogy between an organization's IT infrastructure and living beings Autonomic Nervous System. Now, reading this book over again, I'm struck by a perception that even now most organizations still do not have the level of IT integration that Gates speaks of. So my question(s) to you is this: Does your enterprise / organization have real-time reporting and notification of all important data?

ICT Peace Initiative
On monday I had the opportunity to be part of a discussion that was convened by ICT leaders, in attendance were 4 key players in the ICT industry. The ILO has invested 25 years of pioneering work in the field of employment-intensive infrastructure programmes. It has been successful. It is now widely recognized that these programmes are effective in bringing much needed income to poor families and their communities. These efforts create between three and five times as much employment for the same level of investment.

Ask for advice and control your costs
Ask for advice. I had built a successful business in the past as an employee and was looking to find my entrepreneurial wings. I was able to put together a profile of myself and I didn’t approach venture capitalists specifically to find a company. I went to them and asked them for their council. I wanted their opinions as to where and how I might be able to leverage my assets. That partnership approach worked very well.

Africa’s Infrastructure-Incremental or Entrepreneurial?
Ordinarily, when I run into the opening phrase, ” what Africa needs is…” my mind is then prepared to hear all manners of conjecture next-maybe because the phrase connotes one big homogeneous landscape, where there is uniformity throughout the furthest reaches of the continent. However, that all changed the moment that I stumbled onto Andrew Mack’s blog, yesterday. For his post seemed to start in a similar way, but what came next made a lot of sense to me. This post was inspired by a post on Ethan’s blog, however, Andy holds a slightly different view of the continents infrastructure related challenges.

3.3 Major Constraints facing the MSM sector: Support for Growth-oriented Women Entrepreneurs in Tanzania, 2005

Spending on infrastructure represents about 20 per cent of total investment in developing countries, and from 40 to 60 per cent of public investment, according to the World Bank. A reorientation of policies on infrastructure investment to ensure that technically viable and cost-effective employment-intensive options are used speeds the reduction of poverty by generating productive and decent employment. The challenge is to develop the appropriate mix of capital- and employment-intensive investment techniques according to each country’s needs and resources.
