Check Your Ego at the Door

| Managers by the nature of their duties have authority over employees that report to them. How the manager exercises this authority defines them as a manager or leader of people. Leaders control their ego, in most cases, managers do not and it takes a confident person, secure in their abilities to control their ego. Ego, for our purpose of discussion is defined as and elevated inaccurate self-image of importance and using that idea to coerce an employee to complete their command.

The Hard Sell
| |
| I declare right up front that I am not, and never have been a fan of the Hard Sell. You have probably guessed that from all my previous posts.
And if you ask most people about what they think about the profession of selling they will often describe something akin to the ‘Hard Sell'. Of late I have also noticed a rise in ‘hard sell' stories where people are being unnecessarily pressured to buy or sales people being pressured to sell at almost any cost.
The hard times may be pushing some people to do things they wouldn't normally do like the "Hard Sell". |

Former IBM Pro Lashes Out Over Sales Assessment
| |
| A CEO of a fairly large-sized but under-performing OEM asked us to evaluate his sales force. One of the three regional managers, who assessed as poorly as any regional manager could, called to complain about his results. In addition to calling me a toad, Bob said that in the eighties he used to sell and manage at IBM and he led the top performing team. He finished by letting me know that we didn't know what we were talking about and, by the way, he would be picking me up at the airport for the kick-off of their national training initiative. |

When the Fed Bails Out the BIG 3...Who Bails Out the Dealers?
| |
| The Senate and House got a jolt this week while debating whether to bail out the Big 3 when it was learned that we shed over 500,000 jobs in November. The possibility of additional job losses from the domestic auto industry became the main reason for
rushing to approve a bail out. Weʼll call it “Job 1”, coining a phrase from Ford. During the wonder years of post 911 rebates, 0% financing, and high margin sales of pick-ups and large SUVʼs the domestic manufacturers started adding new dealership locations like drunken sailors, diluting the value of the existing locations, lowering their sales, raising their marketing expenses for a share of voice in the over crowded print and electronic media, while forcing additional inventory on all of the locations.

Resistance to Change Is a Fact of Life.
| |
| It has been astutely noted that the difference between a recession and a depression is this: in a recession, your next door neighbor loses his job, in a depression, you lose your job. Impersonal change is an abstract concept. We can't be adequately prepared for the future until we realize that the changes impacting others will almost certainly affect us as well. This article provides information on resistance to change and how to do a better job of coping with change. |

Bullies At Work: Exceeding Corporate Limits
| |
| Most bullies are scared of confrontation, which is why they typically hide behind their position or size for intimidation. Simply put, they wouldn’t do it if it didn’t work. It’s like a fix and, like any other addict, they crave the high. Workplace bullying is a multi-level permission fix requiring weakening consent. Bullies deflect their weaknesses with superficial strength by exploiting working relationships, the bullied person struggles with setting and maintaining boundaries, and the companies allows it when they fail to implement a standard conduct policy for employees, regardless of position or expertise. |

Can sales and medicine mix?
| |
| As you know, I am an advocate for the philosophy that ‘everybody lives by selling something’ and that people buy from people they trust. At its best, selling is about the principle of exchange:- the exchange of value where both parties benefit from open and transparent communication and know what they are engaging in.
So can ‘selling’ be seen as a legitimate role in the various practices of medicine? I.e. GP’s, dentists, optometrists, physiotherapists, surgeons, etc.
If we take it that good selling is where people are fully informed of the facts surrounding their situation, are given legitimate options to choose from, and are in a position to make their own decisions without fear of deception, bullying or intimidation then, yes, selling can form a part of the practice of medicine. |
