A Minute A Day…
| |
| It’s that time of year again - time to set our goals. For some reason we all think that January is the time to start fresh, to once and for all be the things we want to be and achieve all the things we want to have. We make our New Year’s resolutions, we promise to do things better, to turn over a new leaf. The winter air carries countless promises of losing weight, making money and being better friends/parents/spouses. It all sounds so good. So why are we so bad at making it happen? Let’s face it- by the end of January most of us have already abandoned our goals as mere pipe dreams and we shrug them off with a mental note to do better next year. |

| |
| Yes, folks it’s that time of year again in which we will be expected to spend 20 million euros an hour on Christmas Eve in Ireland along Yep, that’s right, AN HOUR. Small Business Tips To Ensure Your Business Survives Christmas
| |
| In Australia many small businesses go through a very quiet period from about mid December until the end of January. It is when people go on holidays, focus on Christmas parties and generally do anything except think of work.
Many small businesses close down after Christmas because they failed to adequately plan in terms of cash-flow or how to maximise the use of their time. Instead of planning and taking action, they sat and worried about lack of customers.

YOUR 2009 ACTION LIST!
| |
| I always love the New Year. For me, late December and early January have always been a time of intense planning. What changes should I make for the New Year? What are my income goals, and how do I plan to get there? These questions have always been part of my annual business analysis. |

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS IN SEPTEMBER
| |
| Forget about New Years Resolutions in January, they don’t work! You’re wasting your time! September is the best time to set New Year’s Resolutions.
Crazy idea, perhaps you disagree? Then answer this question; “why is it that most people who make them and seem quite serious about it, never really follow through and keep them?” A very good question don’t you think. I have addressed this issue before but on both occasions it was in January. Maybe now is a better time to take a different tact and initiate some thought, discussion and/or action around the idea. |

On the Lighter Side
| |
| What a tough year. I am sure most of you are glad it is over. The recession has had an impact on every one of us. But, now is the time to look back and be grateful; grateful for who you are and who you want to become. December, unlike years of the past was very busy for me. This is only because in prior years I always took the month of December off. This year due to the tough economy that just didn't seem like a good option. So, I spent time in Cleveland, Dallas, Tampa and Montreal. I froze in Cleveland & Montreal, didn't take a coat to Dallas and should have and I went to Tampa during Florida's coldest temperatures in years. Over the holidays Tracy and I visited friends in South Carolina and got to see a calf born on a cattle ranch and took our dog to the ocean. (It was way to cold to even consider swimming.)

As business leader, it is your responsibility to keep the ball rolling, utilizing and maintaining momentum to not just achieve immediate objectives, but your long-term vision as well.
In this month’s article we discuss 5 tips for maintaining momentum: |

5 Tips To Make Sure You Don’t End Up An Accidental Spammer
| |
| The Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007has only caught one victim – Lance Atkinson who in December 2008 was fined NZ$110,000 for being part of an “international spam email operation” (NZ Herald 23 December 2008). But does that mean that a NZ business that isn’t part of such an operation can safely ignore it? The answer is no, because people’s tolerance of spam is ever decreasing and with that there is an expectation that legitimate businesses will have email policies in place which comply with the Act. Not to have one exposes you to prosecution but perhaps more importantly could seriously damage your reputation in the marketplace. |
