When to Walk Away

Last month at TED2006 I had dinner with a leader of a major technology company, and we discussed the Big Task Summit my firm is hosting in April. On behalf of our clients Kaiser Permanente, Safeway, and Dupont, we’re inviting leaders from 30 other companies to share in some significant research focused on reducing corporate healthcare costs and increasing employee wellness funded by these companies. This executive suggested I invite one of her co-founders, saying,"He really does care about these issues."

Save Yourself from a Missed Opportunity

Presence. Persona. Personality. 'Tude. Whatever you call it, we all have our own unique way of interacting with the people around us. Being aware of how your "way" differs from others can help save you from a bad first impression sinking what might have become a powerful relationship for you both.

The confusion

We frequently confuse internal biochemistry (caused by habits and genetics) with external events. If we didn't, marketing wouldn't work nearly as well.

Creative Abrasion and the Sales Knowledge Activist

| I don't know enough. Not enough about my customers & prospects, or their customers, prospects, suppliers, partners and competitors. I don't know enough about the objectives, strategies, requirements, problems or people of any of those groups. I don't even know enough about how my own products and services - either alone or combined with other products and services - can address the issues of my customers and prospects. Eeesssssshhhhh...

What If You Are a Jerk But Don't Know It?

Each of us is guilty of acting like a jerk from time to time. Some people we know have it down to a fine art! The thing I want to explore in this discussion is a kind of blind spot where people who are acting like jerks have no idea how they are coming across to others. This article discusses how you can tell if you are being a jerk too much of the time.

What Working Women Want Mo$t

A new survey of some 12,000 working women found that above all else--flexible schedules, more affordable health and child care, etc.--working women most want a (freakin') raise. And some jerk named Dan has a *brilliant* idea as to how they can get one.

Rich Jerk Marketing - A Different Approach to Marketing

Internet marketers try to promote a respectable image. All across the World Wide Web are messages telling you to be friendly and courteous and you'll be an internet success. But what if being a complete jerk got you a greater level of success? What if the respect of your clients didn't matter?

Trained Seals

No matter what price you quote, many customers will automatically say its too high, maybe way too high. Like the seal, that response is so deeply drilled into them that just about every rep they meet gets the same reaction. How do you get beyond the knee-jerk reaction and into a reasonable conversation about their situation, needs, budget, and time frames?

Internet Marketing Tools & Training: Why You Must Learn

| I'd like to address a question I keep hearing which, honestly, I asked myself not too long ago and that is: 'Why should I learn Internet marketing?' My knee-jerk reaction is usually: 'Why wouldn't you learn Internet marketing!?'. Of course that's not as productive a response as I'd like to give so let's observe the following 3 reasons today:

Do I Always Have To Know Why?

| Have you ever considered that sometimes asking why can be simply a knee-jerk reaction and not alwasy appropriate. Sometimes we can get caught up in our own stuff and make things unnecessarily difficult for others by demanding why and asking way too many questions.
So when is a good time to ask why and when should we just let it go and just do it? Well, hopefully this article will shed some light on that for you and provide you with some tips to use in this area. |

7 Day Challenge to Being Happier Today

| So, what is this challenge that can make you happier in just 7 days?
NO complaining for 7 days!
Of course the goal is to keep it up after 7 days. :-)
I’m not talking about just the big complaints… like “oh my gosh, the dog had another accident on the rug!” but also the little complaints like, “traffic is so slow this morning,” “it’s so cold outside, winter stinks, why won’t the kids pick up their toys, I hate these shoes, my co-worker is a jerk,” etc. We all do it, often without even realizing that we’re complaining.

Do Over

When somebody pushes your buttons, instead of a knee-jerk reaction, take a deep breath and take control of your response. It doesn’t matter whether you burn the toast, miss the deadline or find out you have cancer, how you react is your call.
