Memoir: How to Write about What Troubles You the Most
Everyone has a story to tell, and unfortunately those stories aren’t always pleasant. What makes memoirs and other personal stories of recovery and triumph so appealing is that struggle is universal. And writing about it is one way—a great way—to make sense out of what troubles you the most.

It IS a Popularity Contest
Business and high school actually have one very important thing in common. Thinking back on my high school days, I remember the start of the school year and when elections for class president were about to begin. . .

From Go Fast Kids to Calm Kids
Making that transition from holiday mode to classroom. How excited do kids get with the start of school approaching? Getting kids to go from the freedom of school holidays to move to that place of being settled and ready for school can be a challenge for some parents. Many children now days are identified as being ADD and ADHD I call these kids “go fasts” and the transition from holidays to school can be a bit more of a challenge for these kids. Being a “go fast” kid is fine, they are full of excitement and life, but it does not always suite the classroom environment. So how do you handle the transition time as they move into the structures of a new school year and a classroom environment?

Become a Student Of Success And Change Everything
I heard this term long after I was a student of the learning environment known as school. When I was in school I never had good grades and becoming a success seemed to be something that was left for others. In school we are all graded on the merits of the people who excel at learning. This article is about how anyone from all walks of life can change their life to be anything that they want it to be. Its about how, after many years of believing that I had to settle for what life dealt me by not being good in school was something I could change. I heard that to change your life you had to change the way you think.

New School Year: Lessons from a Middle Schooler
Today is the first day of school in Michigan and I am the new mom to a Middle Schooler!. Time has flown so quickly. It seems like just yesterday that I was holding him in the rocking chair in his room. I remember looking at his little legs and thinking to myself, “some day his legs will hang over mine when he sits on my lap. I can’t even imagine it.” And now here we are, it’s been years since he’s spent any time on my lap. His legs would almost hit the ground, all in the blink of an eye. Where has the time gone? I watch with amazement as he heads off to Middle School with nothing more than anticipation. Hallways to maneuver, new school, way more kids, lockers and classes to find. His elementary school is nothing more than a fond memory and he is ready to move on. I am so proud of him today!

Media Bias: Can Small Business Survive?
When I went to journalism school decades ago, we were taught that the media is supposed to be objective. In fact, the true hard-core journalists I knew refused even to vote in elections, just as a precaution against forming an unwanted bias. Wow! What a difference from that day to this. Now we are fed a steady diet by the media, not of the news and facts, but of the "direction" and agenda. Dissent is unwelcome on good days and openly fought on most. Not that it matters, but it's hard to figure out whether we have a state-run media in the U.S. or a media-run state!

What To Do When You're Lacking Inspiration
The primary source for "inspiration" in business is to focus on "Why." Why do you do what you do? Why'd you choose that career, that industry, that company? Why did you decide to start your own business? Figure out "Why," and you'll find inspiration pretty quickly. I'm a former journalist, and they trained us in journalism school to look at the Ws - Who, What, When, Where, and (of course) Why. (They also threw in How, and constantly lamented the fact that word did not start with W.) If you're struggling with what to do when you're lacking inspiration, try these other "Ws" and see if they don't point back to "Why."

New Study Suggests Lessons for Online Journalism
According to a new study cited in the NY Times, journalists need to rethink their online models. Perhaps the most significant recommendation from the 139-page report, published by Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism is to change journalists', and their audiences', relationships with advertisers. According to a new study cited in today's NY Times, journalists need to rethink their online models. Back-to-school shopping is the second biggest consumer spending event for retailers, behind the holiday shopping season. Retail franchises that carry back-to-school must-haves are benefitting as families prepare for the impending school days.
