Staying Motivated In A Struggling Economy
| |
| Fear is a very powerful emotion. When we live in fear, even of the unknown, there is a tendency to isolate, exert control and be on the defensive. It drains our energy and creates exhaustion.
The majority of coaching conversations I am having these days are about this fear generated by a struggling economy. Worry over business progress, finding a job, salary and bonus eliminations, increased job performance expectations have taken over people’s mindsets thus decreasing motivation and focus for themselves and their business.

Lack of Focus
| |
| As the stock market continues to flounder around (mostly the wrong direction) and some people in the middle east continue to try to destroy each other, I woke up this morning pondering failure. I thought of another “classical entrepreneurial lesson” that we made at Martingale Software – lack of focus.

The Business Plan
| |
| I periodically get questions from readers of this blog about business plans. I was pondering the best way to work through a “business plan series” (similar to the Term Sheet series and Letter of Intent series) when Dave Jilk - my partner in Feld Technologies (my first company) - dropped a few documents on my desk, including the original Feld Technologies business plan. A scanner, Adobe Acrobat PDF maker, and a little OCR later, I had the document in electronic format. |

What are the three biggest challenges suppliers face in their efforts to win government business?
| |
| Being well into the 7-Part "Seven Steps to Success: Jump Start Government Contracts Series," with expert author Judy Bradt on the PI Window on Business Show on Blog Talk Radio, the launch of the Public Sector Suppliers Forum on LinkedIn and of course the Essential Connections Blog, we seem to have touched on a hot topic that has been simmering for some time. Specifically, the disconnect between the tremendous opportunities afforded companies through government contracting, and the practical realization of said opportunities for the majority of suppliers. |

It's What You Don't Say that Runs the Show
| |
| I learned so much from my first life and business coach; lessons that I'm still using today in both my business and in my life as well as with my own coaching clients, some 20-plus years later. Now that's lasting value. (Thanks Judy B.)
One of the most valuable lessons revolving around communication was the principle -- "It's what you don't say that runs the show." To say it a bit more accurately, it's those things we feel like we can't say for fear that we'll get into trouble with the other person that end up shaping the relationship and often in ways that ultimately are unhealthy for everyone involved.

Ambition, Resilience and Starting Over
| |
| Judy Elder was the General Manager of Microsoft's Consumer Division in 2002. Shortly after she gave this inspiring speech, she had a brain aneurysm and died at the age of 47. Judy talks about ambition and why we shy away from embracing women who have ambition. Feeling confident in yourself takes a lot of trust. Believing in yourself can carry you through some very tough times as this article will show you. |
