When to Walk Away
| |
| Last month at TED2006 I had dinner with a leader of a major technology company, and we discussed the Big Task Summit my firm is hosting in April. On behalf of our clients Kaiser Permanente, Safeway, and Dupont, we’re inviting leaders from 30 other companies to share in some significant research focused on reducing corporate healthcare costs and increasing employee wellness funded by these companies. This executive suggested I invite one of her co-founders, saying,"He really does care about these issues." |

Managing the Process of Automation: Leveraging Capabilities Without Forfeiting Accountability
| |
| "It ain't easy leading a software company these days. Customers are sick of poor quality, inadequate security, old-fashioned business models, and pie-in-the-sky claims for trends like open source. They just want software that works. That was the message coming from customers, industry experts, and even some company executives at the Software 2005 conference last week in Santa Clara, California.

The Value of Your Word
| |
| Dear Jane,
Recently, I broke a promise to a colleague and didn’t complete my part of a project on time. Now she says she can’t trust me anymore. I think she’s overreacting, especially because I told her the reasons I was late. What else can I do?
My 79-year-old mother received a letter from the Austrian Government a few weeks ago. You see, my mother, along with her family and many other Jews in Vienna, was forced to flee when the Nazis invaded in 1938. She was just 10 but she remembers clearly the name of the Nazi Commissar, Anton Kaiser, who stormed her family’s home and forced her father to sign over the deed to their apartment, her father’s life insurance policy, his business, and all his possessions. |

Kaiser Permenente - User Submitted Health Plan Reviews
| |
| I currently have Kaiser Permenente's health insurance. Kaiser is the preferred provider for my husband's work, who carries the health insurance for our family. I do not care for the insurance program. Firstly, it is expensive. For a family of 5, we pay approximately $500 per month in premiums. Secondly, the co-pays are high. To visit the doctor it costs anywhere from $30-$50, depending on the type of doctor being seen. I recently had a baby, and while the regular visit co-pay was cheaper at $15 per visit, I had to pay the $15 co-pay every time I was seen. Near the end of my pregnancy, I was having some complications and was being seen up to twice weekly. During the last month, I amassed over $100 in co-pays for obstetrical care. With Kaiser's program, I also feel more like a number than an actual person. The quality of care is comparable |
