Media Mogul: Rupert Murdoch is Born
He took a small-town newspaper and turned it into a billion dollar operation, gaining control of the information flow to nearly half the world in the process. He is loved by some, hated by many and even feared, but the power that Rupert Murdoch has in this world is undeniable. By thinking beyond national boundaries and embracing the opportunities presented in new technologies, Murdoch has created the first truly global media empire.

Making Headlines: Murdoch Makes the News
After having successfully revived The News, Murdoch began looking for other daily and local newspapers to acquire. In little time, Murdoch had gained control of most of the newspapers in Australia’s capital cities, including Sydney’s The Daily Mirror. With this, he was able to begin offering the larger competitors in Sydney a real challenge. His papers were soon becoming known for their exciting stories about sex and mayhem.

Lesson #1: Be Ruthless
“We have no intention of failing,” says Murdoch. “The only question is how great a success we’ll have.”

Lesson #2: Play By Your Own Rules
“For better or for worse, our company is a reflection of my thinking, my character, my values,” says Murdoch. When it came to listening to others, Murdoch wasn’t very good at that. He knew the rules of the industry inside and out, but following them was another story. So long as something was legal to do, Murdoch wasn’t above doing it.

Lesson #3: Stay Ahead of the Times
“I think we’ve been an agent for change, everywhere, and I think change frightens people,” says Murdoch. “They’re going nicely in what seems like a settled industry, and someone comes in and says, ‘I can do this better. It doesn’t matter how nice that other one is.’ That’s one of the distinguishing points of our acquisitions.”

Lesson #4: Know Your Business Inside Out
“I try to keep in touch with the details,” says Murdoch. “I also look at the product daily. That doesn't mean you interfere, but it's important occasionally to show the ability to be involved. It shows you understand what's happening.”

Lesson #5: Build a Strong Team
Reflecting upon his success, Murdoch commented, “I feel proud but it’s been a long and bumpy ride.” It was not a ride that Murdoch took alone. From his early days working on Adelaide’s The News to his current position at the top of the multi-billion dollar News Corp., Murdoch has learned the importance of surrounding himself with qualified people who can help him achieve his goals.

Success Factors: How Murdoch Became a Magnate
“I'm a catalyst for change,” says Murdoch. “You can't be an outsider and be successful over 30 years without leaving a certain amount of scar tissue around the place.”
