Counterpoint: Patents and Defensibility
Three of my buddies who are patent attorneys disagreed with my diatribe against patents as a key component of a startup’s defensibility. Being the open-minded Guy that I am, I offered to publish their counterpoint so that you can obtain a broader perspective of intellectual property issues for startups.

(Guest Post) Optimizing Value in the Economic Downturn [and Recovery]
This article is the second in a three-part series of guest articles on optimization by Dr. Olga Raskina, Lead Scientist, with Emptoris, the supply and contract management solutions provider. As we push on through the troubled economic environment, corporate leaders are laser focused on bringing supply chain management under tighter financial guidelines. An article I recently read in Supply Chain Digest highlighted the typical urgency felt by procurement managers to cut supply chain costs.

Trained Seals
No matter what price you quote, many customers will automatically say its too high, maybe way too high. Like the seal, that response is so deeply drilled into them that just about every rep they meet gets the same reaction. How do you get beyond the knee-jerk reaction and into a reasonable conversation about their situation, needs, budget, and time frames?

Wasted Away in Businessville
These are lean times, at least according to the media. Whether they are or not still poses an opportunity to do a little belt tightening in areas of your business that are often overlooked. In Prosperous Periods Promote Tactically, In Down Times Promote Strategically
The chaos of the financial community has proven that the fallacy of their house of cards and smoke/mirrors has finally caught up with them. But that shouldn't depress the entrepreneur who has an idea, drive and ... at least some money!

The Path of Least Resistance
Have you ever faced a situation where none of the obvious next steps felt good? Or what about a financial crisis and all of the solutions made you cringe? There’s nothing like feeling stuck or out of control that will give you a stomachache or a splitting headache faster. How do you use the laws of attraction deliberately when you don’t know how the heck to get to a better state of mind?

Is Ford's auto-xchange the "Real Deal?" (Survey Response 5)
In a recent video that was released by The Ford Motor Company, Ford's Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Jim Yost indicated that the company has to "share information in real-time" and therefore can no longer use "the sequential processes” in which there were many “handoffs" and "transfers of information." Yost also emphasized the fact that Ford needs to "integrate much more closely with their customers, supply base and even internally," as well as stressing the importance of making information available to multiple levels of their supply base "simultaneously," thereby eschewing the current "cascade processes that might take days, weeks and even months" to disseminate. To enable you to respond to this question, you can access both the video as well as the corresponding article by contacting the author.

Recession Power: How Great Companies Rise to the Top, Even in Down Times
Are you tired of hearing all the "doom and gloom" forecasts regarding our current economy? Do you find yourself obsessing with worry and fear about the potential impact on your business? Are you ready to shift from victim mentality and knee-jerk reactions to opportunistic thinking and proactive strategies to profit even in recessionary times? Even during the great depression, huge fortunes were made by many. The Kennedy, Rothschild and Rockefeller families all dramatically increased their fortunes throughout the depression. In every recession since then, many companies have not only survived but risen to the top despite the economic times. Read this article and learn what separated these companies and what you need to do to thrive in this uncertain economy.

Your CUSTOMER Satisfaction Is Tied To Your EMPLOYEE Satisfaction
WHAT DO YOUR CUSTOMERS REALLY THINK ABOUT YOU? We constantly endeavor to achieve 100% CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. We invest our time and money developing surveys and devising ways to improve our rate of return on those surveys. We empower the information gathered to correct individual problems and micromanage our way to solutions. In fact, much of the comments we act upon don’t really reflect upon the way our business is actually being conducted. These knee jerk reactions create more problems than they solve. The most important feedback never makes its way to our “gatherers”. Our BEST customers don’t respond to surveys and the truly DISSATISFIED customers will never give us a second chance.

Internet Marketing Tools & Training: Why You Must Learn
I'd like to address a question I keep hearing which, honestly, I asked myself not too long ago and that is: 'Why should I learn Internet marketing?' My knee-jerk reaction is usually: 'Why wouldn't you learn Internet marketing!?'. Of course that's not as productive a response as I'd like to give so let's observe the following 3 reasons today:

Do I Always Have To Know Why?
Have you ever considered that sometimes asking why can be simply a knee-jerk reaction and not alwasy appropriate. Sometimes we can get caught up in our own stuff and make things unnecessarily difficult for others by demanding why and asking way too many questions. So when is a good time to ask why and when should we just let it go and just do it? Well, hopefully this article will shed some light on that for you and provide you with some tips to use in this area.

What If You Are a Jerk But Don't Know It?
Each of us is guilty of acting like a jerk from time to time. Some people we know have it down to a fine art! The thing I want to explore in this discussion is a kind of blind spot where people who are acting like jerks have no idea how they are coming across to others. This article discusses how you can tell if you are being a jerk too much of the time.

Do Over
When somebody pushes your buttons, instead of a knee-jerk reaction, take a deep breath and take control of your response. It doesn’t matter whether you burn the toast, miss the deadline or find out you have cancer, how you react is your call.

Is Paranoia an Acquired Taste?
In "Don't Bring It to Work" the underlying idea is that when stress hits the hot button we all revert to behavior patterns we learned as kids in our original organization, the family for protection and survival. That is what seems to be showing up around our country in this time of sadness and confusion. The knee-jerk reactions are so similar to ones that we can all remember when disagreements broke out in elementary and middle school playgrounds. We were given detentions, told to behave, but rarely sat down to really look at what started the upset in the first place.

The Power of Yes!
You probably already know that positive people are more fun to be around; that it doesn't feel good when people say 'no' to you; and, that being open-minded is generally better than being critical or close-minded. But what you may not know is just how overwhelming the evidence is a 'yes' mentality can help you in almost every aspect of your life and business. My aim is to hit you hard and repeatedly with the 'yes' hammer until it's permanently embossed on your head and in your mind. My hope is that you re-wire your knee-jerk reaction for a 'yes' auto-response -- or better yet, you re-wire your brain so that you consciously choose a 'yes' or 'no' response with no knee-jerking at all!
