Lesson #4: Break The Mold
| |
| Hershey didn’t do things the way they had always been done before. He didn’t accept old methods, stale ideas or out-of-date techniques. Instead, Hershey used his imagination to innovate, take his company in new directions and break the molds of the past. It was this characteristic of Hershey’s, and his understanding that attainable rewards required him to take some prudent risks, that drove him to success. |

Sweetening The Deal: Hershey Tries Chocolate
| |
| Back at home in Lancaster, Hershey had no capital to start another business, but he still had the vision and the determination. This support allowed Hershey to begin experimenting once again. In a short time, Hershey had perfected a recipe he called ‘Hershey’s Crystal A’, a caramel candy made with the secret weapon he had learned of in Denver: fresh milk. |

From the $5 correspondence course in ice cream making Greenfield and his partner Ben Cohen took from the Pennsylvania State University in 1978, to being named “U.S. Small Business Persons of the Year” by President Reagan in 1988, the childhood friends not only achieved tremendous success, but they did so on their own terms. |

Leadership Strategies Is it Normal To Be Abnormal?
| |
| Hey leaders, PAY ATTENTION! This is a great time of year to really take some private time and think about how you want your company and team to work together in the future.
So I'd like to tell a personal story. We just had a fabulous holiday party at The Country Place, our retreat center in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. Now, we have owned this place for two decades and it is on 400 acres in the midst of nature with tons of trees and a spring fed small lake (or large pond). |
