Lesson #1: Success Doesn’t Happen Overnight
| |
| “I think a lot of people, friends included, were saying, ‘I know you're a believer in this and all, but you know, sometimes no matter how hard you believe it just doesn't happen. Maybe you should kind of give up the ghost and try something else,’” recalls Case. While he can look back on the early stages of his career now and laugh, at the time, it was no laughing matter. Case was struggling to become a success, to find his niche and to make a name for himself in an industry in which he saw limitless potential. “I just believed, and so I kept doing it…we're going to make this happen. We were going to stick with it.” |

Lesson #1: Beginning as a Beginner is Okay
| |
| The tremendous success of the Subway chain is a testament to the fact that you do not need to know everything about the business before you open up shop. When DeLuca first got into the sandwich-making business, he was doing two things he had never done before; not only had he never ran a business, but he had never even made a submarine sandwich before. |

Lesson #1: “Creativity comes from constraint”
| |
| When asked whether they had anticipated just how big Twitter would be when they first launched it, Stone replied, “Yeah, we knew Barack Obama was going to use it.” Williams followed with, “I knew I was going to be on Oprah in two years.” |

What THE INFORMANT! Can Teach Us About Workplace Relations
| |
| The true story of whistle-blower Mark Whitacre, as told in Steven Soderbergh's latest film, THE INFORMANT!, is a cautionary tale showing how an employee's insecurity and hunger for attention, and the actions stemming from these issues, can have a destructive effect on that person's workplace. Who among us hasn't had co-workers or even bosses who were their own worst enemy, with their actions affecting everyone in the long run? Paul Cherry's article shows readers how they can learn from Whitacre's mistakes as shown in the film, and how asking the right questions and digging deep for the truth from the start will save everyone a lot of headaches. |

No Laughing Matter.. or is it?
| |
| A zillion more job cuts, no credit available, healthcare costs keep rising, and on and on and on.
No laughing matter for sure… well, maybe. I contend that taking this economic downturn or any form of adversity 100% seriously won’t help you reverse your situation any faster, so you might as well laugh a little along the way. An upturned mouth is a must in a downturn economy. Hey, laughter is free and convenient – can’t beat that in today’s market!
In that spirit, here are a few of my favorite one-lines from comedian Steven Wright:

Sales and Up-Selling is No Joke
| |
| Everyday in addition to the basic spam of email, friends send me jokes. Some are funny, some are not. Those that are truly funny have a nugget of wisdom or enlightenment within. Here's a story that I like and it not only makes sense, but delivers a common sense sales message that we can all learn from. And, that's no laughing matter.

Prospecting For Business
| |
| The need for prospecting:
If I had $/£100 for every time I’ve been told.....
"We’re pretty good at converting enquiries into business... it’s just getting enough of them".
"I’m not bad once I’m in front of a prospect... it’s just getting to that point".
.....I’d be laughing all the way to the bank!. |

Garber on Business: Advertisers, Know Your Market
| |
| There's a radio ad on the air these days and every time I hear it, I burst out laughing. And it isn't meant to be funny, either. An essential rule-of-thumb for advertisers trying to win over stingy consumers like me, is "Know Your Market." |

But I’m not a writer and I can’t write!
| |
| 5 years ago, if you’d have said to my parents that I was going to be a writer and copywriter they would have been rolling around on the floor laughing! They would have laughed every single day about what you’d said. Every time they saw you they would just curl up! |

| You Have the Right to...Ask for Help!
In my seminars I often tease that some women believe they were born with a tattoo that says, "I can do it all"...or "I must do it all." I then ask for someone to show me that tattoo. Although we all laugh, it's not a laughing matter. The sad fact is that 67 percent of working mothers in America come home and make dinner all by themselves. Worse yet, 72 percent of them clean up after dinner, again all by themselves.
Let's look at the younger generation. My children have known since they were small that there's no such thing as the "Kitchen Fairy." Food doesn't magically
