Reduction to the Achievable

There is the classic sales technique called “reduction to the ridiculous”, whereby the cost of the item being offered for sale (or the premium above a competitor’s offering) is framed in terms of the cost of a daily cup of coffee. If we take the concept (a big thing made up of tiny pieces) and apply it to goal setting and target achievement, then it becomes a useful tool when undertaking an ambitious objective - "Reduction to the Achievable"

Dynamic Indifference

There’s a funny leadership story in a book by Eric Yaverbaum titled “Leadership Secrets of The World’s Most Successful CEO’s. From the book – When asked to share his most powerful leadership technique, Bill Bonner founder and president of Agora, a large international publisher, replied “I practice a technique that might be called DYNAMIC INDIFFERENCE. I do not try to lead, probably because I am no good at it. Instead, I merely focus on the work itself. What needs to be done? Who’s got a better idea? Who’s going to do it? No attempt is made to lead. Just the contrary, people are ignored. Finally, they get tired of being ignored and turn to me for leadership. Then I tell them I can’t help them. This forces them to figure out the problem for themselves and resolve it.

Is "leadership" dead?

"Leadership" now seems to be a catch-all term (a bit like "communication"). That being the case, has the time now come when we should be considering whether the term "leadership" has lost its impact and whether we need to radically rethink the whole concept by moving out of all the traditional concepts like "servant leadership", "situational leadership", “contingency leadership”, “leadership habits” etc that are based on attitudes and behaviours?

Leader Interrupted

| The concept of leadership within the protection of this book or the walls of any classroom is much different in execution. Too often, leaders understand the factors that promote effective leadership yet still fail to execute at critical opportunities. Why can leaders say (and even believe) the right things and then contradict the very same statement with their teams? Why does leadership theory get diluted in application on the job? How can we develop leaders to execute properly? These simple questions and the answers are in fact a revelation for most organizations.
