An Audience with Charisma

Throughout my career I have often found myself in the company of individuals who have that indefinable quality that draws you to them, and leaves you feeling wonderfully energised as a result of meeting them. As a teenager I studied theatre and the performing arts. I remember the day that I realised technical excellence alone did not guarantee a brilliant performance. Being a huge fan of Ballet I fully appreciated the precision and mastery of The Royal Ballet Company. Yet when I saw The Bolshoi Ballet Company perform Swan Lake the artistes would glide onto the stage yielding an invisible power that captivated, and mesmerised their audience whom they were able to move to tears.

Training is a Journey Not a Destination

When I was thinking about this article, one of the things that got me wondering was why we put ourselves through training, through learning. I was over 30 when I learned to drive first and I remember praying that the driving instructor would not turn up, that he would forget me, that I wouldn’t have to go through that awful vulnerable vacuum of being a learner…I couldn’t believe that I would ever get to the stage when I could actually hold the steering wheel with one hand and change the gears with the other.

Read Business Magazines and Get a Mentor

Read as many business magazines as possible. I read INC, Fortune, and PROFIT, among others. I go into Chapters when I know nobody is going to bother me. I turn off my blackberry and I scroll through them all. Business magazines tell stories of entrepreneurs, their successes and challenges. They give you great ideas for marketing and I schooled myself through them. I’m not much of a book person and I’m a visual learner so magazines work well for me.

The Learning Organization and the Leading Learner

| What is a learning organization? How does a leading learner transform the typical organization from one of mediocrity to a machine of excellence? Hard Work and Success -- One Follows the Other

The point here is simple -- and sobering for those who are looking for career success shortcuts. Be willing to go the extra mile. Create custom resumes for every job for which you apply. Once you get a job, work harder than others. Volunteer for unpopular jobs -- and then do a great job. Yes, if you want to become an outstanding performer, it's important to be a lifelong learner, set and achieve high goals, and get organized. But it's also important to do something a lot simpler -- and totally in your control; be willing to work hard. Hard work will help build your brand and put you at the top of the promotion list, and bottom of the layoff list.

Reverse Mentoring

Recently, mentoring has taken on many other forms such as peer and group mentoring. The latest form of mentoring involves organizations shifting into reverse; they are asking tech-savvy employees to teach the "old dogs" new tricks. |
