Psst. Your Inner Child Is Getting a Little Fed Up with You
| |
| I was heading out for a bike ride the other day and since you were busy watching TV, or maybe you were shopping or working late, or waxing the Hummer, or programming your Blackberry, we can't remember, your inner kid asked if they could come out with me because they were bored and, frankly, a little disgusted with you. |

Lesson #5: From Sight to Sound, Create a Signature Brand
| |
| It has been described as a “throaty pounding and off-centered drumming beat,” but everyone who owns a Harley-Davidson motorcycle knows what it is to hear one. In fact, the adept ear can pick a Harley out of a crowd before the eyes are even able to see it; every bike the company produces sounds the same when you turn the keys, and yet completely different from any other bike manufacturer. Attaching a unique sound to Harley-Davidson engines was just one of many deliberate steps the company’s four founders took to build a strong brand and a loyal following. |

Your Core Desire for Learning
| |
| With so much to learn, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Focus on your Core Desires as a way of defining the direction of your learning. This will allow you to maintain peak interest while collecting information and processing data. If you are learning about things you are not interested in, your enthusiasm will quickly wane.
Suppose you have a Core Desire to learn how to ski. Eagerly you seek to accomplish this desire-you buy the best equipment, take ski lessons, and willingly stand in line in the cold. You spend time listening to other skiers reveal the finer points of the sport. You ride the ski lifts even if you are afraid of heights. Because you have this Core Desire, you go all out. |

Leaders Take Responsibility for Their Choices
| |
| When our son Chris was four years old he desperately wanted to graduate from his Big Wheel tricycle to a real two-wheeled bike. He started with training wheels on the bike but soon wanted them removed and didn't want me holding the bike for him. The result was that each time he tried to ride the bike, he'd fall after going just a short distance. After his sixth failed attempt, his frustration got the better of him: He grabbed the bike off the ground and bit the front tire as hard as he could. Clearly, it was all the bike's fault!

| Over the years I have had the privilege to ride with a number of reps both from manufacturers as well as distributors. Those ride-alongs and these columns in Vet-Advantage plus the weekly sales tips are designed to help more amateurs move up into the professional ranks. A recent extended trip into the field provided me with a stark comparison that I would like to share with you. |

Riding into Risk - Only In My Mind!
| |
| Many years later after having my children and long after the risk taking years – I re-learned to ride a motorcycle. Only this time the bike was 3 times the size and weighed in at about 487 lbs. I learned not only how to ride it safely by taking a course – but also learned how to lift it – in case I ever fell or dropped it. (which I did a few times!) I rode for four years before we moved and sold the bike. Three years went by before we decided to get another motorcycle.
