Leadership Assessment #5 – How People Treat Each Other
There are hundreds of assessments for leaders. The content and quality of these assessments vary greatly. You can spend a lot of time and money taking surveys to tell you the quality of your leadership. There are a few leading indicators that can be used to give a pretty good picture of the overall quality of your leadership. These are not good for diagnosing problems or specifying corrective action, but they can tell you where you stand quickly. Here is one of my favorite measures. It is how people in the organization treat each other.

A Different Kind of New Year's Resolution
This year, make two New Year's Resolution lists - one for your external goals and one for who you want to be.

Being Connected or Disconnected: Coming from LOVE or "???"
We've all had that feeling of "being connected". This could be described as "coming from a place of love" or "being in your power". Perhaps it's when we're with a significant other, playing with a child, performing at work, or doing something you're confident at. This isn't necessarily "romantic in-love"...it's just open, warm and giving to others. You're confident and centered in yourself. Unconditional love and acceptance. Isn't this the energy we'd like to live from all the time??

Adopt an Emotion: GRATITUDE
Gratitude is a feeling of thankfulness and appreciation. Appreciation and gratitude are interchangeable. In gratitude there is acceptance, love and acknowledgment of “what is”. In gratitude there is spaciousness and connectedness.

Adopt an Emotion: LOVE
This is truly one of the great emotions in life, isn’t it? The word LOVE is used in numerous ways to capture that special connection that ties us all together as human beings, and to everything we have an affinity for. In our purest state, I believe we love everyone and everything in this world.

Loving What Is
How many times have you heard "your thoughts create your reality?" Lots? Me too. I understood this conceptually, but often time my thoughts simply dominated my reality and I felt helpless, stuck and tortured by them. Yes, I knew they were lousy, disempowering thoughts ruining my life...but, they felt REAL. As much as I TRIED to consciously release them, I couldn't. Even techniques in NLP, "changing my focus" and using positive language only seemed to work temporarily. The idea of having a "still mind" sounded great, but my meditation practice was filled with lots of swimming thoughts, and little "stillness". Then I was introduced to "the work" of Byron Katie, called Loving What Is.

Selfless Contribution
Contributing is the act of GIVING one's energy for the good of another, whether it's a listening ear, sharing our expertise, wisdom, a skill or labor, a large financial donation, a genuine smile, a word of encouragement, coaching a friend, authentic feedback or volunteering your time and energy. Contribution makes the world go round. When we give, there is a typically a reward... sometimes a paycheck or monetary compensation, and other times we know we'll receive appreciation, acknowledgment or love from the recipient. Yet, how often to we truly contribute SELFLESSLY?? -- Where the focus is solely on GIVING with NO CONCERN of receiving ANYTHING in return.

The 5 Love Languages
People express and receive love in different ways. Dr. Gary Chapman identifies these as the five languages of love.

Dear Husband, Inspirational Article
This letter, a wife to her husband demonstrates that even though now they are working hard to achieve financial and educational freedom, she will support him no matter what. Their time together at the present is limited, they should not and will not bring the past and should not worry about the future, the focus should be on “now”. No matter how long and what happens is irrelevant, as long as they are doing it together with love, honesty and respect.

Interdependence, The Truth, Love, Self Respect and Interpersonal Competence

Living an extraordinary life
All of life is either surviving or thriving. Whether it is a plant or animal or human, this is how life is. Question becomes, "how do we live an EXTRAORDINARY life?" Marriage
As the 10th of 12 children, my older brothers and sisters obviously got here many years before I did. Two of my older brothers and two of my older sisters had failed marriages. Since I was at the bottom of the production chain, my younger brother and I had the benefit of what my mother had observed and taught us. She pointed out that we should never date a girl more than once or twice if we discovered we would be unwilling to have her as the mother of our children and be unwilling to take her wherever we were and introduce her with pride to anyone. I listened intently to what my mother had to say. I chose carefully.

Healthy Fear
There really is "healthy fear." For example, it's very healthy to fear drinking before you drive. However, fear should not be allowed to run rampant through our lives so that it becomes such a devastating factor that it produces failure. The problem is not getting rid of fear, but using it properly.

Stealth Market Research & Google Movies
I love stealth market research -- that is, unusual ways of figuring out what companies and competitors are doing. There are all sorts of ways of doing this sort of thing, from counting cars in company parking lots on outward. But there is no denying that technology continually creates new ways of ethically observing companies, and therefore new kinds of stealth research.

Psychology By Any Other Name
I love the book Nudge-the content's pretty good, the title even better! But I hate-literally hate-the title of the genre. Namely, "behavioral economics."

Leaders Are Communicators
There is an old saying, “That which can be misunderstood will be misunderstood.” This resolution, passed by the Board of Councilmen in Canton, Mississippi, in the mid-1800s brings that into focus. “Number one: Resolved by this Council that we build a new jail. Number two: Resolved that the new jail be built out of the materials of the old jail. Resolved that the old jail be used until the new jail is finished.”

THINGS YOU MIGHT FIND DIFFICULT
“Love means never having to say you’re sorry!” You may or may not be old enough to remember that line from the movie; “LOVE STORY,” which believe it or not came out all the way back in 1970. I suppose the rationale for what was meant here was that love is unconditional and therefore does not require apologies. Combining love with apologizing seemed like a good lead into what I wanted to write about this month. Life presents us with all kinds of challenges and at times there are a number of things all of us find difficult. Two of those in particular that many find difficult are; saying we’re sorry and telling someone we love them!

Enough Leadership Already!
I know... I know...there exists a plethora of books and articles that point us in the direction of solving all of our problems with someone's version of leadership. As a contributor of contemporary leadership principles, I too often get caught up in the hype of the next great leadership think. Amazingly, with my own love and passion for studying the human need to lead or follow, I am often obscured from some very basic truths. Simply put, without the "right" people on the team, the quantity and quality of the leadership provided will always be limited.

Needs vs. Neediness

We all think we’re going to fall in love with Prince (or Princess) Charming and live the rest of our days together in a Disney fairytale “happily ever after.” I don’t know anyone who has lived “happily ever after” all day, every day, day in and day out as the Disney fairytale romances suggest. However, you can live happily ever after if your relationship is based upon realistic expectations.

The foundation of life is all about love.

Well, then I could stop being frustrated about being frustrated.

Developing The Law Of Attraction
The key things we do in our everyday living developes our dominant thoughts. Everything that we do in life from our happiness, to our love life's, to our jobs are through the thought process.

Heart broken? How to let go and move on to be truly happy again.
You felt like the Universe conspired to bring the two of you together against all odds and all the signs were positive and pointed in the direction of the two of you being together. Astrologers said you were meant for each other, people said you looked great together, most of the time, you were on Cloud 9, when together, photographs of you two looked fabulous, friends thought you were "the couple", you pre-empted each other's desires so often, and were so so sensitive to each other's moods. You fit almost like hand in glove most of the time, you danced and sang to the same rhythm and ate the same food and loved the same wine. You were made for each other. Two lost souls who were incomplete and sad and lonely, found each other.....and then...one day, it was all over. How do you let go of a relationship like this?

Forgiveness - Letting go in order for you to be able to give again. Forgiving = For giving
It is a way of releasing yourself from the need for the person you feel hurt by to do anything to make you feel better. And there’s no requirement that you forget, but simply forgive, as in let go of the holding on of the pain, and the holding the other person responsible for your happiness. See them as having done the best they could, even if it was very worst for you. It was still the best they could do. And let go. See that you too did the best you could at the time. See my article - "How to let go and move on from regrets"

Relationship = to relate with a significant other person lovingly everyday.
Look at it as a verb "to relate with a significant other person lovingly everyday" not a noun. It is a verb – continuous – you are in a relationship for as log as you are relating with this person. And if you are doing it so lovingly then you are in a goooood relationship! Whose responsibility is a relationship? 50-50? 80-20? In my opinion, each partner has to give 100% in order for a relationship to work. A real loving relationship is a partnership of mutual support and mutual pleasure and mutual respect.

TRUST YOUR PARTNER IMPLICITLY – OR don’t be in the relationship!
Simply put, intimacy, love and trust go together. In order to be intimate (physically, emotionally or spiritually), we have to let our guard down and be vulnerable. This requires a sense of emotional safety on both sides, and a belief that our partner will not betray or intentionally hurt us.

When you FEEL good not just think positive, you attract more good stuff into your life
Use your memories and your fantasies and your dreams and desires to create positive and fabulous feelings. It IS as easy as that! Truly! So how do you MAKE yourself feel good when you have negative thoughts or anxiety or sadness from a lost love or fear of not having money? Well, perpetuating on those thoughts will only attract more sadness, anxiety, lack into your life, so guess what? You don't have a choice if you want to be happy!

Love Strategies - How to make your relationship satisfying
If you knew how easy and almost effortless it would be to make the person you love feel good, wouldn’t you just do it? Especially when you were aware of the good feelings it would invoke in the other and therefore infuse back to you? It sounds so easy and almost mechanical, but it is so effective and not doing it is so detrimental to the relationship.

Coach Pete's Tip: Manage Priorites Not Time
The secret is in managing your priorities not time. We make time for important things in our lives. When a crisis or important task is suddenly forced on us it some how it gets done. What we are doing is really managing priorities not time. We can not manage time, we can not stop it or hit the pause button. We can not rewind and replay the last hour.

What's Your Motivation?
It's become a joke to wonder "what's my motivation?" like an actor, when we have something in front of us to do and just can't seem to get it done. We may complain that we just can't get motivated to do something.

Reciprocal Links Are Still Not Dead

There is nothing wrong with reciprocal links. And here is the proof.

The Flavors of Fear and How to Choose the One That’s Yours
We are frequently told about how we should ignore fear and go for what we want and to some extent that’s really true. However, I think fear (like ice-cream) has more than one flavour and some fears can actually help us. There are times when fear is appropriate…like when we are faced with physical danger or someone is threatening one of our nearest and dearest. I like to distinguish between four types of fear.

Lesson #2: Do It Yourself
“I love my product,” said Lauder. “I love to touch the creams, smell them, look at them, carry them with me. A person has to love her harvest if she’s to expect others to love it.” Because of Lauder’s love for her company, she took a very hands-on approach to its operations, getting her hands dirty in everything from production to marketing to sales. She understood the importance of hiring a good team, but her desire for perfection and quality drove her to want to control all aspects of her company, at least until it got too big for her to handle alone.

STAYING TOP OF MIND WITHOUT BEING A PAIN IN THE NECK
By John Doerr “And if you can't be with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with, love the one you're with, love the one you're with, love the one you're with.…” - Stephen Stills Why does it seem that our clients (and prospects) too often take the advice of seventies rock stars when selecting their professional services providers? Perhaps the following story will shed some light.

Marketing With Love?
Recently I was reading The Five Love Languages book and realized that the principles that apply to communicating love between people also apply to conveying the emotion of love in your marketing.

EXPRESS YOUR LOVE!
In order to experience love from others we need to experience and express love for ourselves first. Part of how we can express love for ourselves, is to share our love with others. You can deepen your self-love through healthy outward expressions of love for others. These questions will help you start thinking about how you want love to show up and be expressed in your life.

Sue Grafton is a Success Because She Loves What She Does
Successful people have a clearly defined purpose for their life. Sue Grafton's purpose is writing mystery stories that entertain large numbers of people. My purpose is helping others succeed. My friend's purpose was creating better surgical equipment. What is your purpose? It should be something you love. If you don't love it, you'll get burned out and see your work as a grind. If you love what you do, you see your work as a gift and something to which you look forward every day. As we approach the end of 2009, spend some time thinking about what you truly love doing. Then, and more important, think about how you can make doing what you love your life's work.

Fall In Love With Yourself
Avoid making falling in love with yourself into a chore or another opportunity to blame yourself for any shortcomings. Love yourself the way you love others. Go out of your way to see the best in you and be glad of it, it's your birthright!

You Can't Give What You Don't Have
How can you truly love another if you have not learned to love yourself? How can you trust others if you cannot trust yourself? How can you value the things around you if you place no value in yourself? How can you forgive someone you love if you have not yet forgiven yourself? These are deep but profound questions that hold an important but simple truth. It is true that we can't give what we don't have and it is when we learn to give to ourselves first that we can ultimately give our best to the people we love most.

The Symbolism and History of Valentine’s Day
Maybe it's true that Valentine's Day was invented by Hallmark, but I don't care; I still love Valentine's Day! One of the things I love about Valentine’s Day is the history and symbolism of the items used to depict the holiday of love.
