Why most managers aren’t up for the job
| |
| If you’re a business owner, try answering this question: What does it mean when your company is experiencing lots of turnover, a sharp drop in performance or revenues, people calling in sick all the time, and a general sense of malaise and crankiness?
Although you may attribute these problems to the employees themselves, or a few bad apples among them, the reality is that all of these symptoms indicate serious trouble at the top. Without the right kind of leadership, individual business units and the company as a whole will suffer.
But the blame cannot be placed entirely on the manager. Poor managerial performance is often a result of a poor selection process. I call it bad jobs happening to good people. Well, it’s not so much that the job itself is bad, but that it is the wrong one for that particular person.

The Power of Words
| |
| In a world so full of "me first" attitudes, it is no wonder we see so much turmoil and dysfunction in the world around us. The financial fiasco being played out on the national stage is evidence that something is seriously wrong. Day after day, words of disaster come at us from all directions; words that instill fear, panic and negativity. News of foreclosures, more bank failures, bail outs totaling billions of dollars...it is no wonder the confidence level of people in our country is the lowest it has been in 28 years. That has to change and it can if we commit ourselves to changing what "we think about" and "what we say" to ourselves and others! |

New Partnership for Africa’s Development
| |
| The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) was adopted as the continent’s main development framework at a July 2001 summit meeting of African heads of state. According to NEPAD, attainment of Africa’s long-term development goals is anchored in the determination of African peoples “to extricate themselves and the continent from the malaise of underdevelopment and exclusion in a globalizing world.” |

Who is Your Worst Critic?
| |
| Most of us do not have to look far to find our own worst critic. We just need to look in the mirror. Even though it is not good for our physical or spiritual health, we all tend to dwell on what we need to do better.
There is an antidote to the malaise, and it is easier that we think. All we need to do is re-train our minds to avoid dwelling on our deficiencies. Easier said than done? Not really. There are three simple steps you can take that will alter your self perception if you have the will to do them.

The Marketplace of Fear
| |
| Much of today's marketplace malaise is being blamed directly on fear. The fear of the unknown, the fear of new taxes, the fear of new regulations, etc. all have been cited as causes for the continuing worst economic period since the Great Depression. Real or imagined this fear has caused a paralysis in our business communities and delayed the inevitable recovery.
Realistically many of the causes of this fear are out of our control but that is no reason for us to give up trying to grow our businesses and help others grow theirs. The big problem is that most of the decision-makers and/or leaders across today’s business spectrum have only known growth and prosperity. The last period of real economic difficulty occurred in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

Blind CEOs
| |
| It is amazing how many toxic environments exist in organizations. One would think with all the leadership training it would be harder to find oppressive cultures. A larger conundrum is why so many top leaders simply cannot see their contribution to the malaise. In this article I explore the problem of blind CEOs and offer some antidotes.

Leadership Insight: Recover Your Leadership Mojo
| |
| I’ve been there. You’ve been there and there is a high probability that all people in a leadership position have been there sometime during their career.
Some people will call it malaise, cruise control, mailing it in or going through the motions. For our purpose, we will call it Mojo Deficiency Syndrome. Whatever label it gets, it is the blocks of time where you just don’t have the passion and desire to move forward and you are content with managing the status quo. Unfortunately, leadership is really not about keeping things the same. It is much more about making it better.
