Lesson #4: Break Down the Barriers in Your Way
| |
| “For every failure, there's an alternative course of action,” said Ash. “You just have to find it. When you come to a roadblock, take a detour.” |

I am a senior woman in an organization whose power structure is dominated by men. How do I succeed in this game without losing track of who I am?
| |
| Women who have attained senior positions in an organization often find it lonely at the top. A 2006 Catalyst Canada study shows that only 4.2% of FP500 companies have a woman as CEO or president. Women make up nearly half the work force, but rarely make it into the ranks of corporate officer. In fact, only 7.3% of so-called “clout titles” belong to women.
As a woman in a senior position, you can maintain your personal momentum by staying true to who you are, knowing your strengths and having the confidence to show them off, as I describe below.

The X and Y Fighting Factors under Stress: Fresh Insights
| |
| Male partners (professional or personal) can drive their female counterparts crazy. The reverse can also be true. This widespread problem may be more about his Y and her X than commonly appreciated. That’s because to a certain extent our specialized chromosomes (female XX and male XY) compel each sex toward a particular behavior, one that is not always advantageous in our modern day and age. |

Time for Service Warriors
| |
| We live in a time of spirit larceny. Layoffs have robbed colleagues of colleagues, leaving those who remain feeling hollow. And, the hustle for razor thin margins has put short term profits at center stage and long term relationships in the cheap seats. As organizations are put in a profit-at-all-cost vise, what can be squeezed out is the positive spirit of service providers. It is a time for service warriors. |

Take the Oath

| Honor. It's a word that you don't hear much anymore, except maybe in reference to antiquated notions of chivalry or, horrifically, as an Orwellian descriptor for murder in repressive, male-dominated societies.

An Audience with Procurement
| |
| Recently I was approached by the head of CISP Australia (Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply), Jonathan Dutton to be their after dinner speaker at the Women in Procurement Conference on 19 June 2008.
This was a new event on CIPSA’s calendar which provided a unique educational and networking opportunity for those interested in the advancement of women within the procurement profession. While procurement has traditionally been a very male-dominated profession, an increasing number of women have achieved success and recognition in recent years. The conference aimed to examine the challenges women face as they try to make their way in this male-dominated environment and what lessons can be learned from those who have successfully gone before them. |

You Have the Right to...Have Male Friends!

You Have the Right to...Have Male Friends!
For some of you this statement could be controversial so let me clarify. When you live your life with integrity - i.e., you have good personal ethics and you have developed a reputation of trust - then having male friends will not be seen as a threat to your existing relationship with your man.
Having friends of the opposite sex is important in many ways. In my seminars, when I talk on the topics of Leadership, Coaching, Team Building, Parenting, and Communication, I recognize the fact that men and women do all those things equally, but differently.
I take care that every seminar contains what men need to hear and what women need to hear...and they're different!
When I walk into a big networking event at a conference or a chamber of commerce, I see women talking and sitting |

Your Career, Your Responsibility - Individual Branding
| |
| Individual branding is critical if you want to progress your career - who’s in control of your reputation at work - you or your colleagues?
If you don’t take a proactive approach to building your personal brand in the workplace, you’ll soon find that others do it for you.
Whatever you want your reputation to be, you need to have a plan of action in place so that others perceive you in this way.
If you sit back and do nothing your colleagues will either consciously or sub-consciously pigeon-hole you. And once you become known as a certain ‘type of person’ it’s difficult to change the way others think of you. |

How to Differentiate Yourself and Stand Out in Your Market Place
| |
|
If you work in a large organisation it can be hard to differentiate yourself from your colleagues in order to progress your career.
How you handle your personal reputation will go a long way into shaping how you’re perceived by colleagues and management in your workplace.
For many people a job is just a job. If you’re keen to get ahead and be noticed by the people who matter, you need to demonstrate that you have rare qualities. |
