The Eternal Childhood: Jim Henson Is Born

“When I was young, my ambition was to be one of the people who made a difference in this world,” said Jim Henson. Henson would fulfill his youthful ambition by not only becoming the most famous puppeteer in modern history, but by changing the nature of puppetry itself and inspiring the minds of millions of children worldwide.

10 Lessons I Learned From My Mother

| 1. Establish and stay connected to a supportive community. My mother is genuinely interested in the welfare of her family and friends. She visits with them as frequently as she can and when visits aren’t possible she calls or writes them. She is a good friend, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and cousin! She cares for others and they care for her.

Lesson #2: Become An Expert

Whether it was sewing lessons from his grandmother, shopping trips with his mother or an apprenticeship with the esteemed coat manufacturer Dan Millstein in the New York fashion district, Klein knew that if he was going to succeed in the fashion business, he was going to have to take advantage of every single learning opportunity that presented itself. Known for his dedication to his craft, Klein often sacrificed much of his personal live to improve his skills and increase his chances of succeeding professionally.

“I’m sorry, I just didn’t get to it because I didn’t have enough time”

Time management has been around for as long as my grandmother has and even longer! If you as a business leader are finding that you're constantly putting out fires, running against the wind and getting nothing done, you are in need of a wake up call. The tool that I've created and use with my clients is about just that..shocking you into realising that the things you say you want are never going to happen if you keep managing your time this way.

It's Only A Money Problem: Solve Your Business Problems, Not The Symptoms

| Ida, my Prussian grandmother, loved talking with friends and family.
Once, after listening to a friend’s woes, she said, "Oh, it's only a money problem!"
Her friend sat stunned for a minute and asked, "What do you mean?"
"Well, there are health and money problems. A health problem only God can help with. A money problem is fixable by humans." |

Venture Capital - Preparing The Plan

Make it so that your mother or grandmother can understand it. Entrepreneurs too often fill their business plans with of acronyms, tech terms, and buzz words. Intermediaries can usually tell after the first paragraph how difficult it will be to raise capital for your business. Condense what you do and what you want into a statement that you can make very promptly in seconds or minutes. If you cannot communicate quickly, you will lose the investor’s interest.

Know Your Market

Whether you are starting a new company, launching a new business initiative or spinning out a company, the first and most important thing you must do is know your business. I think there are two constituencies that you have to convince, other than yourself. First, you have to know your business concisely enough so that you can quickly explain it to your grandmother; so that she understands it. The second is you have to comprehensively explain it to sophisticated investors so that they are convinced it's an attractive investment. If you can do this successfully, you understand the business.

Grandma’s Lesson

Thanksgiving this year was a fabulous family affair. We had the entire crew of aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc. including dogs and cats romping around my aunt Cherie’s house. My grandmother was there cooking up a storm despite having had brain surgery to remove a tumor just nice months before. What a woman.

You Have the Right to Age...Grace-fully!

| You Have the Right to Age Grace-Fully!
When did America become a nation afraid of aging? I worry about what we're teaching our children about growing old and our acceptance of aging...with grace...fully!
I remember my beautiful grandmother. When she laughed, the world sang! She didn't have silicone breasts or a botoxed forehead, and when she gave me a kiss it didn't feel like it came from a swollen sucker fish!
As a grandmother myself now, I think the best aspect of aging is perspective. It allows you to approach life with grace. I am much calmer now and seem to have more

Happy 94th Birthday, Granny!

It truly amazes me to think about what my grandmother has lived to see, from the rise and fall (and ugly reappearance these days) of the communist experiment to the complete transformation of daily life through technological advancement. Perhaps the most wonderful thing about it, speaking selfishly, is the fact that Granny was able to make it to 94. This beloved person, who always had time for me and saved my life on a number of occasions, would not have lived 94 years if the America of 1917 had existed toward the end of her life, instead of at the beginning....
