Trained Seals
No matter what price you quote, many customers will automatically say its too high, maybe way too high. Like the seal, that response is so deeply drilled into them that just about every rep they meet gets the same reaction. How do you get beyond the knee-jerk reaction and into a reasonable conversation about their situation, needs, budget, and time frames?

A CEOs Thoughts on Collaboration
I had breakfast with Matt Blumberg – the CEO of Return Path – yesterday. I’ve worked with Matt for at least six years and love the way his brain works. During my frustrating quest for the best chocolate croissant in Boulder (so far all of the ones I’ve found appear to be exactly the same – I’m guessing there is one chocolate croissant distributor in town) we talked some about “collaboration.”

The Hair Care Pioneer: Madam C.J. Walker is Born
“I had to make my own living and my own opportunity. But I made it!” said Madam C.J. Walker. “Don’t sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them.”

Lesson #4: Make Your Market Your Manpower
Walker knew who her market was and she knew what she had to do to reach them. While marketing strategies of the past focused mostly on advertising, Walker knew that the majority of black women at the time were unable to read. Thus, she began a uniquely successful campaign of face to face network marketing. But what made Walker a success was not just the fact that she knew and understood her market; she was, after all, her own best customer. Walker was able to get the market on her side by using it as manpower.

Lesson #5: Make Perseverance Your Motto
“There is no royal flower-strewn path to success,” said Walker. “And if there is, I have not found it for if I have accomplished anything in life it is because I have been willing to work hard.”

Cancer Conqueror Speaks to Inspire
This inspiring story of Professional speaker and author Matt Jones. On September 11, 2002 Matt received a life changing call from his doctor telling him, "you have cancer." After going into remission the cancer came back twice and would spread to his brain. After slipping into a semi-coma doctors did not think Matt would live. Against all odds he recovered. From that experience Matt was inspired to share his story with others.

Is helping others the best way to market your company?
There is a country song I sometimes hear called the Chain of Love by Clay Walker. It’s a nice little story about how helping others inspires others to help, and that one day the favor you started will return kind fate to you.

W3C Validation not part of Google Search Engine Ranking Factor
Matt Cutts has announced that W3C Validation and clean coding does not factor into search engine rankings. There are other benefits to having a validated website, but there is nothing in Google’s algorithm that will increase SERPS.

Screw the Apocaholics -- The Optimists’ Case
The NYT has a review/summary of Matt Ridley’s latest, “The Rational Optimist”. Worth a read in its entirely, but here are some excerpts from the John Tierney piece:

The Power of the Word
Frequently we become so pragmatic we fail to be effective. A number of years ago the editor of the Dallas Morning News pointed out to the sports writers that “Bill” was not a suitable substitute for “William,” and “Charlie” was not a suitable substitute for “Charles.” Taking him literally, one of the sports writers, in the heyday of Doak Walker of Southern Methodist University, wrote about an important game. In his story he pointed out that in the third quarter Doak Walker had left the game with a “Charles horse.” I think you’ll agree that the story lost some meaning with the use of the word “Charles.”
