Love and leadership the love that dare not speak its name
| |
| It’s commonly said of leadership, ‘They don’t need to like you. They do need to respect you.’ But, what about the other way around? Do leaders need to like the people they lead? One school of thought goes further and says if you don’t love the people you lead, you’ll never be a great leader. In this short article, leadership author Phil Dourado explains

Six Characteristics of Leaders
| |
| A friend invited me to hear Rudolph Guiliani, the former mayor of New York City, speak at a local college. The list below captures what he spoke about. Guiliani told us that after September 11th he had to make many decisions very quickly. He would make 4 or 5 and then close his eyes and pray, "Please make this right." The first characteristic "Strong Beliefs" speaks to that as does my song title above.

What Do You Do?
| |
| New York has always been a career-oriented city. If one does not have a career, they will make one up rather than apologize for being a housewife, or home-maker. It’s only because I had a wonderful New York socialite for a mother-in-law that I ran smack into this. She wanted so much to expose me to her side of life. And loving her the way I did, I made myself fully pliable.

How Am I Doing?
| |
| “How am I doing?” was a question former New York City mayor Ed Koch often asked his constituents. In an effort to make sure he was meeting their needs, he surveyed their opinions constantly. Not a bad idea since it not only gave him valuable feedback to consider but also showed everyone that he was open to getting their honest opinions so he can improve his performance. Do you do this with your customers? Chances are that you don’t, or perhaps you do it in a somewhat ineffective manner. |

New Training Trends to beat Terrorism
| |
| In the weeks following the September 11 terrorist attacks, Nicholas Santangelo of the Fire Department of New York spent days and nights searching for bodies at the site of the collapsed World Trade Center. Sleep was an afterthought for Santangelo and his fellow New York City firefighters as they tirelessly combed through the rubble of the Twin Towers 24 hours a day. |

Sales Training – Remember Your First Sales Success
| |
| The first recognized automobile show in the United States was held at New York City’s Madison Square Garden New York in November, 1900. Much like a first car show, your first sale was in the planned approach and applied training mode. What was your first sale like? If you have yet to make your first sale, then that is your goal. |

Barack Obama Election Ushers in A Different World
| |
| This week I was interviewed by Dominic Carter of New York 1, on his program called Inside City Hall. New York 1 is an all-news program that is popular in New York City, and Dominic Carter is someone I have a great deal of respect for. He should have a national show, but then New York would miss out on his full time and dynamic presence here. He describes me as “a man not known for keeping his opinions to himself” and the interview spanned two consecutive nights. |

New York Commuter Tax
| |
| The state of New York recently passed legislation funding the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which serves the 12-county region of New York City. Pee Tweet
| |
| I had a great flight home from LA on Southwest Airlines on Friday. My boycott on United has been going pretty well, but Amy and I are flying on it tomorrow to New York as it seems to be the only reasonable way to get from Denver to New York. I’m pessimistic. Plus I have a nasty cold so that’ll just make it more enjoyable. |
