The Power of the Mobile Phone for Philanthropy
| |
| The almost universal presence of the mobile phone is making it a powerful tool for the non-profits looking for innovative ways to reach out to potential donors. The power of the mobile phone for an organization lies in the fact that it enables a direct reach to the individual, unlike a website or a banner advertisement. |

Lesson #5: “I feel very comfortable out there, being out on the frontier where it’s rough and unclear”
| |
| “I always find myself out on the leading edge of these new media, and since I’ve done it now for so long, I feel very comfortable out there, being out on the frontier where it’s rough and unclear and a lot of things have to be sorted out,” says Hawkins. “I don’t mind making that longer-term investment and figuring things out and waiting for it all to come around. And there’s always a lot of confusion in the beginning and different ways of thinking about it as a business. And that’s what I’ve always loved doing is being out there on the front, figuring that out for the first time.” |

Digital Marketing
| |
| Simply "Digital Marketing" = Marketing through "mobile devices" + "Internet". If blogspot allows a few GBs of space for a post, then we can probably think of expanding the latter two quoted words. Mobile devices may include a basic mobile phone, blackberryz, iPad etc and Internet includes Email marketing, Affiliate, popups, referrals, social media and so on. The effectiveness of communication through these mediums depends on how innovative one is, there are no limits in ways one can use these mediums.
Digital marketing is a term that has been around for quite sometime but hasn't been very well defined, encompassing things like banner advertising, search engine optimization (SEO) and pay per click. However, this is too narrow of a definition. What about email, RSS, voice broadcast, fax broadcast, blogging, podcasting, video streams..... |

Moving Forward by Looking Over Our Shoulder
| |
| Everyone is busy telling you what's gonna be hot, what's not, what's going to be the killer, what's not. We know too but we're going to wait to tell you what we know until the end of 2012 (assuming the Mayans aren't right). Then you'll be amazed that we're 100 percent right...amazing. But to know, understand what tomorrow holds for us we really need to see what the past year delivered.

Article # 43 How To Do Mobile Marketing
| |
| Many people are on the go these days and are not at home in front of their computer for twelve hours a day. And most of these people have mobile phones with applications such as Twitter and Facebook to keep in touch with their family, friends and most importantly clients. It is certainly nothing these days to ‘tweet’ a quick, “Hey there is a sale going on at Macy's! Come quick!” But before you go marketing you product or service on your mobile phone you must stay within the guidelines.

User interface, brand, content top considerations when choosing a new mobile phone
| |
| Though there are rumors that the iPhone will be coming to Verizon soon (something I'd love to see), I'm dubious it will happen (at least until 2011). I'd also love to see the pricey AT&T/iPhone data plan reduced, especially with these tough economic times. In lieu of either of these happening, it will be the sheer user friendliness of the iPhone that keeps it selling. |

Follow up and Get More Business
| |
| How many people promise to get back to you with that quote, order, report or anything else for that matter and actually do it?
I'd say that most people do not deliver on their promises! Therefore they do not realise that the 'trust' element and their credibility goes down the drain. |

Succession Planning – How to Plan for a Changing of the Guard
| |
| In business there has been a lot of talk recently about baby-boomers looking to retire and who should they hand over the reigns to. This succession planning debate is great – but it neglects the general successions that happen all the time in business. By this I mean the sort of succession that happens:
• When a manager goes on holiday and someone steps into their shoes to fill in while they are away
• When someone gets promoted or transferred to another role
• When someone resigns

Middle-aged consumers & luxury consumption
| |
| For every youthful consumer there is a middle-aged one with more money (and more credit) to spend who would rather like to be noticed too. How does this consumer segment consume luxury goods? What do they associate with? Using the examples of present communication strategies adopted by luxury product marketers and an empirical study, this article argues how they are missing an opportunity and provides managers with a novel way to market their luxury brands, focusing on how middle-aged consumers associate themselves with these brands. |

How to search your employee’s computer and email (legally)
| |
| You begin to notice that your employee has more meetings outside the office than normal. You don't know who these meetings are with. Are you suspicious? You then notice that the same employee always leaves the office to take calls on his mobile phone. Does this make you more suspicious? And then, whenever you approach this employee's desk, you notice that he switches screen from his web browser to word before you get close. Now are you suspicious?
Whilst we would all like to have explicit trust in all our employees, there are some behaviours that just arouse suspicions and the answers to these questions will often lie somewhere in your employee's hard drive. |

Enhanced Google Maps for East Africa
| |
| On tuesday I had the rare opportunity courtesy of Chris Kiagiri, Technical Lead at Google Kenya to have a sneak peek at the upcoming enhanced google mpas for east africa and let me say it was truly awesome. The amount of detail in this new version is quite amazing, a quick look at the nairobi map goes as far down as streets, buildings (building name and icon) and even adds information to indicate if the street is one way or two way. The enhanced maps currently cover major cities and towns in East Africa including Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Dar es Salaam. |

Why the Internet Matters in Africa
| |
| If anyone doubts the power of the internet in Africa, they need to look no further than what is happening in Kenya right now. Kenya is balanced on the precarious edge of a cliff that could quickly descend into even more riots, bloodshed and government heavy-handedness. The people I’m talking to via Skype/email tell me that there are gunshots going off as we type… This isn’t Zimbabwe (yet), but it is still bad. |

Providers Work to Profitably Meet Data/Video Bandwidth Demand
| |
| Friends in the Pacific Basin laugh at us when we talk about our 4G mobile service. When we say the infrastructure is being enhanced with LTE and soon we'll have 12MB bandwidth they look at us with pity. But when they look at our "all you can eat" service there is envy in their eyes.
We don't bother telling them that the everything data plans are either capped or throttled and going away...why disillusion them?
Some really smart people have an idea of how to build a new bridge and get us more bandwidth. It will come to pass even if the broadcasters don't like it because...there's money involved.

Bedtime it’s All About Winning – Really!
| |
| Now we like video games as well as most folks even though we're terrible at it and have the gaming attention span of a goldfish. But seriously we know what the bed is for (yes that too) but seriously ...play videogames?
We admit that our ancient Atari 2600 was a little clunky to lug from the living room to the bedroom (and the big tube TV set) and it's nothing to grab our smartphone and iPad to dash into the bedroom and play an hour of Angry Birds with the wife. Sorry just don't see the point. Maybe we skipped that lecture in our family harmony class but playing video games in bed doesn't get our adrenaline going or relax us. Sounds a little...boring!

Mobile TV\'s Messed-Up Marketing
| |
| For reasons unbeknownst to me (okay, almost certainly hoping I'd say nice things about their phone and service), Sprint bestowed on me a freebie phone some time back, as well as a full-service package of voice, video, and data. I've cheerfully taken advantage of having a second mobile phone -- it comes in useful when in the car on long conference calls and needing to order take-out pizza -- but I have to confess that one aspect of it has surprised me. |

Are Cell Phone Insurance Plans Worth It?
| |
| With the growth and popularity of cellular phones, there is a consumer urge to know that we are protected if issues arise. Consumers carry their mobile devices everywhere they go, whether it be at the office desk or on the hiking trails. It can be very easy to lose, drop, break, or get your cell phone stolen in the blink of an eye. With the dependency on technology and what the cell phone provides, what protections do consumers have? We all think that the cell phone providers give us a cheap and easy way to replace or repair our cellular phones should we have a problem, but how many have actually used the cell phone insurance provided by mobile providers? |

Case Study For Award Winning Video Micro Site

| CallLimiter is a small software developer in Australia that has developed some cool little apps that it sells. They came to us to develop a video micro site for their mobile phone product that can be used to control how long you stay on the phone. This is something most everybody can relate to. The phone companies have managed to get many people to abandon their fixed cost landlines and use their cost-per-call mobile phones almost exclusively, thereby increasing almost everyone’s monthly phone bill. It’s a high price to pay for convenience and not everyplace in the world has discount pricing plans, opening up the market for CallLimiter’s product. |
