The Ether and the Scrum
Every day I get emails from entrepreneurs that make me think. In this case, it’s from a friend who is on the fundraising trail. He started off the email with “I felt compelled to share this with you as someone who would appreciate it.” I thought it was dynamite and asked him if I could share it since – in its unedited form – it captured so nicely what I expect many entrepreneurs feel. And, just as importantly, it’s something I hope VC’s realize that entrepreneurs – even very experienced ones – feel.

The Power Breakfast
Everyone talks about the Power Lunch, but a good variation is the Power Breakfast. The main aspects of a business lunch, or a business breakfast are enjoyable conversation, business discussion, and agreement. The sharing of food is a minor ritual that binds people.

Structure Builds Confidence
You have probably had some sort of structure to your day ever since first grade. Even having breakfast in the morning, lunch at noon and dinner in the evening gives form to your day. Why is this useful? How will having a structure help the business owner and/or the career changer?

Mentors – Do you have one?
I had a meeting with one of my clients the other week for breakfast and as we were finishing up and attempt to schedule our next meeting, we ran into a conflict. He could not meet with me on Tuesday for breakfast, that was the day every week he had breakfast with his mentor, and he had to buy. Not a strange story, until you add the fact that my client was 65 and his mentor, 82.

Diamonds Are A Cereal Marketer's Best Friend
When C.W. Post started a small business in 1895 with his first batch of "Postum" (breakfast cereal) he probably did not foresee his company getting into the diamond business. The cereal company has "followed a path of delicious innovation, creating cereals that have defined the breakfast experience for generations of families" and now it has literally put a twist on its "Shreddies" product by offering the cereal in the shape of diamonds rather than squares.

Self-Coaching Tip: When You're in a Hurry, Slow Down
The other morning, my son, Jonathan, and I overslept. We awoke shortly before he was due at school. While I sleepily got dressed, Jonathan began rushing through the house, trying to put on his clothes, eat his breakfast and gather up his schoolbooks, all at the same time.

If My Dog Could Talk
As I’m writing this article, my dog, Gracie, is curled up next to me on the couch, sleeping happily. So far, today, she has been on a long walk in the rain, chased squirrels in the alley, had a big breakfast, snoozed on the bed and had a few dog treats. Not a bad morning. Over the last 10 years that Gracie and I have been together I’ve learned a lot about sales and life from her. Here are a few of the things she has taught me.

The Philosopher
It was a heavy and wet morning when the trees let out quiet sighs, aching from the fresh weight of the evening’s frost. A man sat in his study watching exhausted leaves tremble and fall, spilling light with each pirouette. It was a morning not unlike any other for this man. He rose at seven, as was his custom. Washed his face with cool water and prepared for the morning’s conversation and walk with Mr. Wellington.

Article # 22 Hate Your Current Job But Afraid To Lose It?
The unemployment rate is through the roof and more and more people are getting laid off every day. We go to work hoping the boss is not in a bad mood and starts to fire everybody in sight. The buzzer in the morning is so annoying at 6am. You are too tired to even eat a real breakfast so you grab a coffee and donut on the way to work. We end up sleepwalking through our days for a measly paycheck because we don’t know any better way to provide for our families.

Robert Oscar Peterson, Founder of Jack In the Box
I pick up breakfast most every workday morning from a nearby Jack In the Box, so it would be only natural for me to eventually research the internet and write an article about my favorite fast-food restaurant. This article was published in Mazon Associates, Inc. November 2011 company newsletter, Building Bridges. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
