At one time, it was assumed that office politics were played primarily by supervisors and managers who were attempting to climb the ladder of success, and executives who were still either climbing or trying to maintain. Not only are office politics tougher today, but the stakes are at their highest. I love the John Jackson wakeup call in the morning in our business. Some of us need coffee, tea whatever it takes to perk you up first thing in the morning. For me it is the cup of leadership .This morning was no different except we all witnessed John tell a very heart rendering story about his dad who passed away 11 years ago and he became very emotional at one point as he fondly remembered his dad. There were many lessons to be learned from this story and I will share a few of the highlight moments of that call with you.

The issue of when and how to play politics makes an interesting study. While we all want to avoid the Machiavellian type of behavior associated with manipulative politics, like it or not we are in a sea of political thought every day. We better get used to it and learn how to navigate well in it.

It was a heavy and wet morning when the trees let out quiet sighs, aching from the fresh weight of the evening’s frost. As an example of how pervasive the word fear has become in our daily lives, on the front page of this morning’s (10/11) Los Angeles times, two story headings caught my attention. One said “Cost Fears Cited in Fire Delay” and the other screamed “Fear and mistrust rule in high-stakes Iraqi politics.”

Thought: • There are big Ps (Politics) which equate to the politics of Congress, major corporations, etc. • There are also little Ps which equates to the environment in which you work. Believe it or not, I never cared much for politics. It always seemed like the political machinations of running the country were happening someplace far away, that people who cared deeply about such things were "on it," and that there wasn't much a single person could do to change things, anyway. When office politics and political savvy are mentioned, many think of selfish, deceitful, deceptive, sneaky, conniving individuals who are doing things like: -- Snitching to management -- Faking a romantic involvement -- Lying or covering the truth -- Playing dishonest games -- Discounting another's opinion or idea -- Back stabbing True, there are people who do exhibit these behaviors. The person who practices such devious politics does so at considerable risk. Practicing unsavory office politics may lead to being unwanted, in dead-end jobs, fired, sued or even punched in the face. However, to ignore office politics is to ignore those underlying forces that account for the differences in success and cooperation with coworkers, your supervisor and management.

Playing Politics
When we hear about someone playing politics, it is almost always considered an evil thing, yet engaging in political thought is something each of us do every day. Whenever you are trying to influence the thinking of other people to be more aligned with your own opinions, you are engaging in politics. It is human nature.
