Cut yourself some slack
How many of you feel that you have so many different responsibilities in your life, that you cannot possibly make it all work. You may be focusing on work obligations while trying to keep your household up and running. All of this running around creates a feeling of hopelessness. I have seen it countless times with clients that try to do it all with enormous to-do lists, and in the end they feel like a failure. Sometimes I just need to remind them of the larger picture. When all is said and done, do you really think anyone is going to care that your home is spotless? Rather, what they will remember is how they felt in your presence, the memories you shared.

Marriage
As the 10th of 12 children, my older brothers and sisters obviously got here many years before I did. Two of my older brothers and two of my older sisters had failed marriages. Since I was at the bottom of the production chain, my younger brother and I had the benefit of what my mother had observed and taught us. She pointed out that we should never date a girl more than once or twice if we discovered we would be unwilling to have her as the mother of our children and be unwilling to take her wherever we were and introduce her with pride to anyone. I listened intently to what my mother had to say. I chose carefully.

“I was really happy being a housewife,” says Debbi Fields, founder of Mrs. Fields Cookies. “I was proud to be there for my husband, but it did not necessarily make me feel great.” Longing for something more out of life than being just a mother and a wife, Fields turned her lifelong passion for baking into a multimillion dollar enterprise that has continued to attract a loyal following throughout the U.S. She did not have a business degree or the support from her family, but what Fields did have was a dream.

How you can work towards a happy life
Last night, my wife and I watched a movie called “A Simple Plan”. It started with a guy saying how happy he was with his life. He had a good job, steady income, a loving wife and some good friends. He was happy. Then with his brother and friend, they found millions of dollars and from then on, everything went wrong. He argued with his wife and brother. The stress of everything got too much and eventually he burnt the money.

Square Peg Round Hole
In his wonderful book The Element, Sir Ken Robinson tells a story that I’m sure many people can relate to. In it, a young girl named Gillian is having trouble concentrating at school. The school – suspecting a learning disability – asks her mother to take 8-year-old Gillian to see a psychiatrist for evaluation. After hearing from the girl’s mother how the girl is always disturbing her classmates, her homework is sloppy and always late – the doctor asks to speak with Gillian alone. Before escorting the mother outside for a private conference, the doctor turns on the radio in the room to occupy Gillian. As soon as the music began to play, the girl was on her feet. From outside the room, Gillian’s mother observed for a few minutes as she moved beautifully to the music, dancing around the room, lost in a childlike trance.

The first woman said, "I'd like to hear them say that I was a great entrepreneur and a terrific mother." The second woman responded, "I would like to hear that I was a wonderful wife and school teacher who made a huge difference in our children of tomorrow." The last woman replied, "I would love to hear them say...LOOK, SHE'S MOVING!!!!!"
