Lesson #3: Experiment and Innovate
“I am in the prime of senility,” Franklin once said. Known for his often seemingly eccentric musings and scientific experiments, Franklin was never one to shelve his ideas or shun his research in the face of public ridicule. He was one of the most forward thinkers of his time and made a name for himself by not only embracing change, but also by directing the change itself.

Lesson #1: “The human brain must continue to frame the problems for the electronic machine to solve.”
For a young boy with no formal education, Sarnoff proved to have an unlikely strong tendency towards the two tracks of invention and innovation. Indeed, his musings from almost 90 years ago remain at the centre of today’s digital age.

More Roundtable Musings: The IPO Problem
At one point during the VCJ roundtable there is some spot-on musing about the effect of the absent IPO market for venture-backed companies. As a panelist pointed out, the last five years have shown why the venture market is not scalable: The amount of money being put into venture-backed companies has soared, while the IPO market remains flat (or down, depending on where you put your start point). At double the current IPO rate it will take 50 years to get the exits LPs are implicitly expecting. Ouch.

What Is Truth?
I found myself recently engaged in a discussion which centered around the question "what is truth?" An interesting question which poses many risks in terms of providing an answer. When I refer to risks, I am of course talking about the polar opposite exercise of earnestly pursuing too deep a philosophical debate that accomplishes little more than inflaming personal passions or, conversely, falling into a whimsical irreverence that is reminiscent of the Bill Cosby "why is there air" routine.

The Influential Leader
Leadership has traditionally been defined as getting people to follow your vision. However, in today’s mega-matrixed world, leaders often do not have directly authority over those they need to realize their vision. Today’s leader must frequently lead through influence – a more subtle yet powerful approach to getting things done. One of the most important aspects of influencing others is spreading and soliciting new ideas.

Crafting Copy That Compels Your Customers to Act
Do you regularly guide prospects towards a sale? What are you asking? One of the best pieces of advice I can offer when creating copy is to always include an offer, otherwise known as a call to action. What do you want your customers to do? Don’t assume they’ll come to your website or storefront just because you’ve told them you’re there. Results driven advertising, marketing and promotions take more planning and effort than an “If I build it they will come” approach. Give your prospects and customers a reason to support your business. Invite them in to your storefront, request they visit your website and be sure to ask them to take action by giving them a compelling reason to do so. What are you “asking” your clients and prospects to do?
