20 Jan 2010: Blue Foods leading coffee chain The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CBTL) is all set to open its fifth outlet at Blue Heaven, Linking Road, Bandra West in Mumbai on January 21. Is there a secret formula for business success?
On the long weekend I visited a regional mall in a suburb of San Diego. The mall was full of people but not as crowded like it used to be on previous long weekends. The first time I visited this mall was in the mid eighties when it had opened. Out of nostalgia I walked by the locations where I had designed stores when the mall had first opened. Unfortunately all of those businesses closed many years ago. Walking by numerous stores, many of them selling merchandise of similar categories I began to wonder how many of these businesses are going to be around ten years from now. A question popped into my mind. Why do some businesses succeed while the others fail?

When was the last time you went to the zoo? The shopping mall can be JUST as adventurous! As interesting as all the animals are, my daughter, when three, told me while we were sitting on a shopping mall bench "This is as fun as the animal zoo, Mama". People have been watching people since the beginning of time. Why would someone pierce their tongue and eyebrow and wear hiking boots in the middle of shopping? Why wear striped shorts with a plaid shirt with sandals and socks? Why can you hear that one person laughing way above the noise of the entire mall and find them in high heels and "lookin' good babe"? And then there's those who have their cozy sweat pants on and "tennies". Who are these people and what makes them tick? With all the 22 companies out there with personality profiles, I have found after 30 years of sales experience

Which stores do a great job of creating loyalty? How do engagement and experience play into that? These are questions I found myself asking as I went on a hastily planned shopping experience to the “local” upscale mall.
