Can Pricing Strategy Affect Your Brand
| |
| Can your pricing strategy affect how your clients perceive your small business brand? I read an article yesterday about soaring fuel costs in the travel sector and how Canada's much maligned national airline (Air Canada) will be implementing a series of fees to recoup costs. The problem with this type of pricing strategy is the effect it has on your ability to build brand equity. |

Wanted: jobs for Africa’s youth - Job Plans
| |
| However, most countries have not yet incorporated job creation plans into their national development frameworks. The national strategies include anti-poverty programmes, commonly based on Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs). These are documents developed with assistance from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to set national priorities, direct spending of debt-relief funds and coordinate donor programmes.

The King of the Skies: Herb Kelleher Gets His Start
| |
| Almost 40 years ago, Herb Kelleher came up with a radical idea: He wanted to start a no-frills airline that not only ensured people got to where they wanted to go and at low prices, but that they had fun doing it. Today, the small Texas airline he founded in 1971 has become the second largest airline in the world by number of passengers carried. Southwest Airlines carries over 100 million passengers to 63 cities across the U.S. each year. |

FEE Fi Fo
| |
| If you have flown recently you have been bombarded with the airline’s new pricing strategy, a mutating “ala carte” menu of unbundled services in an age of bundling. I prefer to call it “un-bungling”. The published fares on the web seem reasonable and enticing but that’s where the fun begins and ends. Once you click to buy, enter the “Fee Demons”. The official names are the Federal Segment Tax, Airport Facilities Charge, and September 11 Security Fee. Obviously this is a form of government taxation that if included in the fare would make it less attractive to the potential flyer. Your airline ticket now resembles your phone bill with it’s array of “after the facts tax”. |

The Day our Icons let us down
| |
| In the seventies Marks and Spencer plc, in UK was the icon of the retail industry. Everyone used M&S as a benchmark by which they measured their performance and aspired to achieve. National Westminster Bank was the biggest bank in UK and the bank that handled the Bank of England. British Airways was the major airline in the world and a company that other airlines looked up to.
There were similar organizations in North America as well and other parts of the world.
Then the world changed. In the 80’s the world shifted gear. The icons were found to be set in their traditional ways. In fact all three of these companies were challenged to the level that they nearly disappeared. |

Chicken or Beef?
| |
| As a former national champion Olympic weightlifter, one of my prized possessions is my gold
medal. It is a very special momento to me, which I display in my office. Recently, I was traveling
on an airplane, and I met a unique gentleman seated next to me. If they ever add an Olympic
event called the Marathon Bad Attitude, this gentleman will have a gold medal, too.
Shortly after introducing myself, he told me he didn't like the airline we were flying on, the
seats, the aisles, or our flight attendant. He went on to inform me he didn't like the city we were
in, the airport we were connecting through, or our final destination. I don't think he liked me
either, but we didn't get that far into the conversation.

Blame Management for Poor Service
| |
| Buried in the publicity of a nasty airline strike was a vivid example of how misdirected management's service improvement efforts can become. To improve service, the airline ordered all attendants to attend three hour "Commitment to Courtesy" classes without pay. "They told us the reason we were losing money was because we were rude to passengers," said one attendant. |
