Content … Keeping the Old Gals Around for a Few More Years

It was great to see all the new capture, production toys at NAB. The camera, production board, software had the content people -- Katzenberger, Moonves (CBS), Carey (News Corp), other major/minor players -- huddling around all their new high def and 3D stuff every minute the show floor was open. When the lights went out and all that content was sent back to the lowly under appreciated storage systems. The same was true of the consumer/prosumer capture/production products that were displayed. The only difference is the storage devices were smaller. In addition to 1-5GB solutions lots of people use the more compact 500GB-1TB storage units that incorporated advanced security technology. Cameras, software, people get their names in lights but when was the last time you saw a 5TB storage unit listed on the film's credits.

Let Paper Join HistoryPress Kits Join History

The CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) started the world of change a few years ago "encouraging" PR people to only use online press services or online kits. Most of the shows followed suit (MWC - Mobile World Congress, CTIA and well most other shows) going green and making press materials available to media folks even if they didn't attend. But the hue and cry from publicists at NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) show was difficult to understand. The benefits of the web and online services aren't new. After all these years we're rather glad to see the blood, sweat, tears of paper kits disappear

Entertainment Flexibility…Big Iron Doesn’t Matter

| NAB -- National Association of Broadcasters -- how the industry has changed over
the years (even with attendance that was down dramatically). We've gone from
huge camras that took two men and a boy to move around the floor. A room full
of sliding levers and people everywhere. Slowly, almost without seeing it the
shift began and schools, health care facilities, houses of worship and even businesses
could afford the lighter, more automated capabilities. Then we moved to really
light stuff -- an HD camcorder, notebook and some kid doing his/her show on the
fly. This year the show had obviously made the shift. Mobile and personal video
took center stage...all in highdef. Get a life folks because o |

Yes, You Too Can Take a Vacation

Surveys are interesting. I took note of this one done by American Express because it backed up some data I learned at a (National Association of Female Executives) NAFE National Conference. According to the survey, 40% of the smallest business owners - those with less than $200,000 in annual revenues - are planning no vacation whatsoever this summer. But even business owners with higher revenues aren't doing much better - only 75% of them expect to get away from the business this summer.

Work Hours

I thought about that many times in the next few years as I tried to find how many work hours were “enough” for me. When I was president of the National Association of Women Business Owners Los Angeles Chapter, the first motion I put on the table at the first Board of Directors meeting was this: “I move that there will now be thirty-six hours in every day.” It was seconded in a heartbeat, and passed unanimously, amid riotous laughter.
