It’s All About PR
You learn that, in the book world, PR is everything. When you walk into a bookstore, you are walking into a treasure house of 140,000 books. Online at amazon.com, there are 2.5 million books. Somewhere in your mind, dimly, you knew that, but nothing drives it home so much as walking into a bookstore and seeing rack upon rack of beautiful books and then you go find your section and see all the racks of beautiful self-help books and then...

Golden Tennis Shoes
If there’s one thing I’ve learned traveling along this life’s highways and byways, is that in all things it is best to completely be yourself. Take a stand for yourself, choose your likes and dislikes, and stand proudly in them. When you are clearly you, other people will see it and know you for who you are. This simplifies life immeasurably....

Making Conversation
Years ago when I was just starting my career in sales at AT&T, another new account executive in my group found it absolutely amazing that I had gone to lunch with a customer. She said to me, “What did you talk about? Wasn’t there a lot of dead air space?” A similar question about finding topics to talk about with clients came up recently at a program that I attended on Rainmaking for Women Lawyers presented by the Women’s Bar Association.

Mentoring
As you know, women business owners make a significant contribution to the economic health of our nation and communities. Their contributions continue to rise as more women become entrepreneurs and existing women-owned businesses expand.

Own a Pet Care Franchise
According to the 2007-2008 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, Inc., 63% of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to 71.1 millions homes. In 2006, 63% of U.S. households owned a pet as compared to 56% in 1988.

Is franchising right for me?
Franchise business offers a more secure route into self employment than going it alone. Over 90% of UK franchise owners run profitable businesses according to the British Franchise Association/Nat West National Franchise survey. By following the proven franchise model the local franchise owner can build his own successful business in the UK. Nick Strong of Select Your Franchise and Richard Holden of Lloyds TSB give insights to prospective franchise owners.

Yes, You Too Can Take a Vacation
Surveys are interesting. I took note of this one done by American Express because it backed up some data I learned at a (National Association of Female Executives) NAFE National Conference. According to the survey, 40% of the smallest business owners - those with less than $200,000 in annual revenues - are planning no vacation whatsoever this summer. But even business owners with higher revenues aren't doing much better - only 75% of them expect to get away from the business this summer.

MomPreneurs: Resources Available for Women-Owned Businesses
The National Women's Business Council, which advises the Small Business Administration, estimates that in 2008 there were 7.2 million majority-owned, privately-held, women-owned businesses in the United States, employing 7.3 million people and generating $1.1 trillion in sales. Here are some organizations and resources that help women-owned businesses succeed.

What The Obama Healthcare Proposal Means for Small Business
Cisco Innovators Forum guest blogger Jeanne Quinn reports that the National Small Business Association released a report predicting the effects that President Obama's Healthcare Proposal will have on small businesses. Will this help or hurt your business?

Networking for women- what's the point?
Most business women are familiar with the term "old boy's network," an exclusive network of business men who can call in a favour from their exclusive group to help close a deal, get new business or progress in their career. There is no reason why women can't do the same. They can achieve this by making it part of their career strategy to join networking groups that can further their career or connect with the right business people. From specific association networks to broad business groups, there are so many opportunities for business women to network, but does networking actually work? In my experience, the answer to that question is a resounding YES.

Increasing Your Success Isn't As Hard As You Think It Is
As a career coach and researcher of working women’s work-life issues, I’ve embarked on a national research study on Women Succeeding Abundantly, in order to learn first-hand the essential ingredients in thinking, beliefs, choices, and behaviors that create and maintain “knock your socks off success” in women. I want to learn from women who can raise their hands today and say, “Yes! I feel tremendously successful on my terms, and am able to live life joyfully and with great gusto."

Work Hours
I thought about that many times in the next few years as I tried to find how many work hours were “enough” for me. When I was president of the National Association of Women Business Owners Los Angeles Chapter, the first motion I put on the table at the first Board of Directors meeting was this: “I move that there will now be thirty-six hours in every day.” It was seconded in a heartbeat, and passed unanimously, amid riotous laughter.
