The Best of Times...The Worst of Times?
| |
| Today is March 12, 2009. I am identifying this day so you can get a perspective of where we are in the world. I don’t know about you but I am getting a little tired of what the media is exposing us to. Every statement seems to start with “during these tough times”, even commercials are getting on board with the negative jargon. Every statistic is peppered with “the worst since”, “highest since”, or “lowest since”. I question the mechanism for such quotes and who really cares? Even the weather has become “severe” weather with it’s corresponding lowest or highest recorded stats. I may regret saying this but I’m ready to hear more about Iraq, that has been pushed to the back page.

Why a Sales Manager MUST Evoke "The Law of Reciprocity"
| |
| For our purposes, the Law of Reciprocity states: If you do something nice for someone, human nature dictates that the recipient will feel compelled to do something nice for you in return.
It is in essence: "you reap what you sow". This is an irrefutable law and one that you should teach your salespeople. The question of will someone actually act upon it at a given time depends on who asks.

Can Simply Being Nice Save You Money?
| |
| It occurred to me (at the tax office of all places) that simply being nice to others really does save us money. This morning while paying taxes, I was pleasant and took the time to be nice and two ladies really did everything in their power to save me some money. As I then drove to my office, I pondered the application of "simply being nice" to a more general business application. Can we as leaders role model being nice and teach our employees to be the same way? Can being nice impact our bottom line? Do we sometimes neglect the very people that mean success or failure in the game of business? |

What is the Difference Between Weather and Climate?
| |
| Weather and climate - aren't they the same? No, the principal difference is the measure of time. Weather is the description of conditions over a short time period and in a localized area or region. In contrast, climate describes the sum of weather conditions over an extended period of time. |

Communication Skills - What we need to be Aware of.
| |
| "Isnt the weather dreadful? Isnt it shocking? God it's a beautiful day" How many times have we heard and responded to statements like this? Well don't knock it as nine-tenths of people would not be able to start a conversation if the weather didn't change once in a while. Communication skills trainers define communication as the exchange of ideas and information through speech, writing and behaviour. |

A Christmas Memory On A Hot August Night
| |
| As I write this, it's a sultry, steamy August evening and I'm thankful for the blessing of a nice air-conditioned home office. For some reason, my mind has drifted to a holiday memory, one featuring very different weather, and a different collection of blessings for which I'll always be grateful.

That dog won’t hunt
| |
| Here we are at the end of March already. I was talking with a friend the other day about an old farmer’s adage we used to anticipate in March regarding the weather: “In like a lamb, out like a lion.” Or “In like a lion, out like a lamb.” The expectation was that if we had harsh winter weather at the beginning of March we would have mild weather at the end – and vice versa. I have no idea why that is expected but it reminds me of all the little clichés that we accept as reality. As farmers we also used to cite, “Red in the morning, sailors warning; red at night, sailors delight.” |
