What can be the "next big thing" in supply chain management?
| |
| Network Member Question
What can be the "next big thing" in supply chain management? Will it be technology-related (eg. new innovations, new IT solutions etc.) or more market-related (eg. changes in consumers demands and expectations forcing companies to adapt)?
Are there any major differences in the SCM developments in different parts of the world? Eg. are European supply chains significantly different from American on Asian supply chains? Will it change in the future? Can we say that any part of the globe is developing faster than the others in terms of SCM maturity?

Are You Doing the Moon Walk --- Going Backwards While Moving Forward
| |
| The death of Michael Jackson recently was a tragic event. No matter what you thought of Michael personally, there is no doubt that he was one of the most talented entertainers of all time. His singing and dancing talent showcased so effectively by his performance in the video and album “Thriller” will be remembered forever as the Capstone of his career. I, like millions of his fans, mourn his passing.
However, the one thing that I remember the most is his invention of the “Moonwalk”. The “Moon Walk” is a dance move that looks as if you are going forward when in reality you are moving backward. Michael made that move famous. His tragic sorrowful death reminded me of that move. The Moon Walk itself brings to mind how many businesses often struggle to achieve success; doing things that are supposed to gain market share and create success. |

| You may not believe me but writing articles is not much different. You can create this love at first sight feeling also, if you give your article “The Look”, which starts with its title. It does not matter what you are writing an article on, it could be the moon, peanut butter or even ant farms. |

Many organizations are looking at supply chain sustainability as a new measure of profitable logistics management. Increasing companies are adding value to their offerings by using sustainable supply chain reporting as a central part of their strategy. Puma, Walmart and HP are three examples of companies that are leveraging their buying power to increase sustainability throughout their supply chains. Research funded by the European Supply Chain Institute (ESCI) indicates that IT supply chains afford significant opportunities for carbon reduction. |

Developing a Team or Organization Vision
| |
| As Mark Twain once remarked about the weather, there's a lot of talk about vision, but very few managers really do anything about it. Visioning is sometimes an innate natural skill just like leadership sometimes is. And the moon sometimes blocks out the sun - but none occur very often. Most people have had to consciously and with great effort continually work to strengthen their visioning. |
